Animal Crossing Direct Every New Feature Announced For The Update & DLC

Nintendo’s October 15 Animal Crossing Direct finally delivered long-awaited news on Animal Crossing: New Horizons, announcing a shocking amount of new content. Over a year since the game received its last significant update, the Animal Crossing Direct promised enough new additions to give it a breath of fresh air. Nintendo managed to jam-pack the presentation’s 20 minutes with tons of information on features coming in both the free Animal Crossing: New Horizons 2.0 update and the Happy Home Paradise paid DLC.

The first segment of the Animal Crossing Direct quickly went over the new, free content players can expect on November 5, and the second segment was dedicated to the paid content being introduced in Happy Home Paradise. New Horizons 2.0 will be the game’s last major free free update, but Happy Home Paradise could mean more paid DLCs is coming later on.

The Direct began with the promised news about Brewster and his cafe, The Roost, which will be located on the second floor of the museum. Players can get a cup of Brewster’s coffee for 200 Bells and join fellow players or villagers for a chat over some joe. They’ll also be able to use amiibo or amiibo cards to bring their favorite villagers or NPCs to The Roost on demand. While Brewster kicked off the Direct, he was far from its only focus.

Animal Crossing Direct – New Horizons 2.0 Update’s Returning & Updated NPCs

Kapp’n Returns

Along with Brewster, players will be able to interact with classic Animal Crossing NPC Kapp’n, who will take them on Boat Tours to mystery islands of strange flora and fauna. These islands may even be in different seasons or times of day from players’ home island. On the way, Kapp’n will pass the time serenading the player with some sea shanties. He’ll dock his boat on players’ home island piers.

Harv’s Island Changes

Harv’s Island in New Horizons will also be receiving a major update. Players will be able to help visiting vendors like Kicks and Leif set up permanent shops there, and they’ll be joined by more returning characters from previous Animal Crossing titles, like Katrina, Harriet, and Tortimer. The Direct showed these shops as small campers the NPCs use to hold their wares, perfectly suiting the vibe of Harv’s Island. Players will be able to get their fortune told, obtain brand-new hairstyles, customize currently uncustomizable furniture, and obtain rare items once the island market is fully populated.

Animal Crossing Direct – New Horizons 2.0 Update’s New Island Features

Group Stretching Activity

Back on players’ own New Horizons islands, there are quite a few changes, too. They will now be able to have group stretching sessions with their neighbors, using motion controls to get a real-life stretch or simply using buttons.

Island Ordinances

Ordinances are a returning feature from New Leaf added in the Animal Crossing 2.0 update that will allow players to dictate things like when their villagers will be active around the island. For instance, if a player is only able to hop in the game at night, they can institute an Island Ordinance to make all of their villagers active at night, rather than during the day.

More Villager Interactions

Perhaps one of the most exciting changes in the New Horizons update is that villagers can now either invite players over to their houses for a visit or stop by the player’s house to chat. It’s unclear what will take place during these visits, but they will likely include new dialogue and interactions, and this kind of feature was sorely missing from Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

New Reactions

Eleven new reactions are coming in the update, including stretching, a two-handed wave, new dancing styles, and more.

Animal Crossing Direct – New Horizons 2.0 Update’s Quality-Of-Life Changes

Expanded Storage, Storage Shed, & Bells ATM

Several quality-of-life changes join the free update’s new content. Players’ Animal Crossing home storage will be able to be expanded to 5,000, more than twice the capacity of the current 2,400, through various upgrades. When they find their pockets full while out and about, players will be able to go to a new Storage Shed, which can be placed anywhere and is connected to their house’s storage. This should make cleaning up and decorating the island much easier. There will also be a Bells ATM that can be placed anywhere on the island, for when players need some extra funds on the go.

Permanent Ladders, More Inclines, & More Bridges

Speaking of ease, players will be able to place permanent ladders on cliffsides to make traversal easier. These can be built with a DIY recipe players can purchase in the Nook’s Cranny shop. The number of inclines and bridges available per island will also be increased from eight to 10 each.

Narrow Space Movement

One of the biggest issues with designing an island or a home in New Horizons is that placing furniture too close together prevents players from interacting with that area. With the new update, players will be able to move through narrow spaces between parallel furniture items, allowing them to make functional, navigable spaces out of complex room decor.

New Photo Mode Views

A new Pro Camera will allow players to see the world around them and take photos in first-person. This new vantage point will also provide new interactions with villagers. In the new tripod mode, players will able to join these new-perspective photos, too.

Island Life 101 App

The new Island Life 101 app on the Nook Phone will give players tops and tricks for how to play the game. It also appears to give new players hints on what to do next, guiding them through Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ story progression.

Animal Crossing Direct – New Horizons 2.0 Update’s New House & Furniture Options

New Furniture & New Customization Designs

The Animal Crossing: New Horizons 2.0 update introduces a number of new furniture items in Nook’s Cranny and to spend Nook Miles on, and players will now be able to use clothing designs from Sable as they would use other Pro Designs, placing them on other clothing, walls, and more. In addition, a Pro Design License will allow them to place ceiling lighting and shelving in their homes, and new accent walls allow players to decorate individual sides of a room with different wallpapers.

New Fences & House Exteriors

Nine new fence types will be added, as well as long-awaited customization options for New Horizons’ existing fences. While players are attending to their yards, they can also change the exterior appearance of their home itself, speaking to Tom Nook to alter its look.

Music Box & New K.K. Slider Songs

A new music box item can play simplified versions of KK Slider’s songs, including 11 new songs being added in the update.

Animal Crossing Direct – New Horizons 2.0 Update’s Gyroids

Finally returning from older Animal Crossing games, the strange Gyroids are coming to New Horizons. Players will be able to find them buried around their islands, sometimes coming across Gyroid fragments that must be planted and watered to grow. The next day, a fully formed Gyroid can be dug up in that spot. Gyroids can be used as decorations throughout the island. They come in a variety of shapes and colors, and they make odd noises that can harmonize together and with the island’s music to create new sounds. Players can also customize the Gyroids to make them better fit their surroundings.

Animal Crossing Direct – New Horizons 2.0 Update’s Farming & Cooking

Animal Crossing Direct Every New Feature Announced For The Update & DLC

Perhaps the biggest addition in the free update is New Horizons’ farming and cooking system. The Animal Crossing Direct showed tomatoes, wheat, sugar cane, carrots, and potatoes, as well as pumpkins, in the player’s garden. It is unclear if they will be more ingredients available, but this is a great start.

Food recipes will be available for purchase with Nook Miles for players’ characters to cook and eat. Eating these meals will be just like eating fruit, so they will be useful for breaking rocks and moving trees – or to simply decorate kitchens and dining rooms. Cooking has been an anticipated addition to Animal Crossing: New Horizons since pumpkin farming was introduced last year, and this update is coming just in time for the Turkey Day event. Perhaps this year, players will be able to make a few dishes for the celebration themselves.

Animal Crossing Direct – Happy Home Paradise DLC’s New Job & Buildings

Animal Crossing Direct Every New Feature Announced For The Update & DLC

The paid Happy Home Paradise DLC gives Animal Crossing players a job. Dodo Airlines’ Wilbur will take them to a vacation archipelago where they will need to help various villagers and NPCs create their dream vacation homes. Players will need to find out what exactly these characters want their homes to look like and design them accordingly. The resort archipelago has quite a few settings and island build sites that also need to coincide with the characters’ wishes. Players will be able to decorate both the inside and outside of New Horizons’ vacation homes to suit each character’s tastes. Though the terrain of the islands cannot be modified, players can switch up the time of day and the season. There will be all kinds of characters visiting the vacation archipelago, but players can use amiibos to invite their favorites. Gifts from the resort can also be given to villagers living on players’ islands that may entice them to seek a vacation home of their own.

In addition to vacation homes, the archipelago will also include various other buildings and amenities players will need to customize, such as an Animal Crossing school, restaurant, and hospital. In order to properly design these new areas, new furniture and items are being added, like hospital gurneys, huge restaurant stoves, school supplies, and more. It is unclear how the vacationing characters will interact with these spaces, but the Direct showed they will definitely be useable in some way. Players will able to share their designs with others on the Happy Home Network App, though this feature does require a Nintendo Online Membership. Through this app, players can also visit previous vacation homes they’ve created for villagers to check in and make updates as they see fit.

Animal Crossing Direct – Happy Home Paradise DLC’s New Design Techniques

New design techniques will be made available in this DLC. Players will now be able to utilize partition walls and differently sized counters to create unique spaces and even more interesting New Horizons designs. In order to make the best vacation homes possible, players will able to adjust the size of the houses themselves, as well as the lighting and ambient music. These new techniques will become available on players’ home islands too.

Animal Crossing Direct – Happy Home Paradise DLC’s New Poki Currency

This new Happy Home Paradise job isn’t a volunteer position. Players will be paid with a new currency called Poki, instead of Bells, that can be exchanged for special items exclusive to the DLC. From what the Animal Crossing Direct showed, it looks like the archipelago’s shop will be a similarly set up to Nook’s Cranny, where there are four to five items available each day.

Animal Crossing Direct – Happy Home Paradise DLC Pricing

Animal Crossing Direct Every New Feature Announced For The Update & DLC

The Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC can be purchased on the Nintendo eShop for $24.99 USD, but it also comes bundled with the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Preorders open on the Nintendo eShop on October 29.

Animal Crossing Direct – Amiibo Cards Series Five

The final announcement of the Animal Crossing Direct was series five of the Animal Crossing amiibo cards. These will include existing New Horizons villagers like Judy, Sherb, and Raymond, as well as a handful of brand-new villagers not yet seen in the game. Some of these are returning from previous Animal Crossing titles, but others are entirely new. The series five amiibo cards will available for purchase on November 5 at various retailers.

After over a year of very little new content, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is finally getting the update it deserves. While this will be its final free update, there is so much new stuff being added that there will be plenty to do for months to come. Not to mention, the Happy Home Paradise DLC is essentially an entire subgame with potential hours and hours of new tasks.
