In life-simulation game Cozy Grove, players control a Spirit Scout who arrives by rowboat and camps on a haunted island. The scout interacts with local NPC ghosts and explores the island’s forest each day, unlocking secrets about the island’s history. The Spirit Scout earns badges, which is the game’s version of collecting achievements.

The game is played in real-time and designed to be played over a span of months rather than a day-by-day case like Animal Crossing. However, with elements of crafting, exploration and decoration, Cozy Grove has plenty of features Animal Crossing fans will love.

Cozy Grove and New Horizons have very similar themes of play, where the character arrives on an island, sets up a camp and speaks to local anthropomorphic NPCs. Cozy Grove’s characters are a little more intriguing, where each NPC has extensive stories and details to unravel, whereas Animal Crossing’s islanders have quite repetitive phrases and limited personalities.

Cozy Grove’s campaign mode, which developer Spry Fox states will be 40+ hours of playtime, is designed to span months. This is great news for players who want games like Animal Crossing but find them difficult to stick with due to the game’s lack of completion or direction. The campaign’s goal is to help spirits, which then unlock further areas of the island for you to explore, making the game more of a slow burner than Animal Crossing, which hands you your entire island in almost one go and will keep the playthrough fresh.

A big feature of both games is the creativity that the player is offered in terms of decoration and character styling. Animal Crossing players raved about the flexibility in island design and custom clothing, with Cozy Grove following suit allowing players to craft decorations for their campsite and redress their character. As seen in the trailer, Cozy Grove players also upgrade their living situation and houses around them, which will give a sense of purpose in the game.

Cozy Grove players can also fish and chop trees, but the devs have yet to reveal if this is for collection purposes or if there is a survival element to the game, as recipes are also a feature of the game but have not been described if they are just a trade item or if they are necessary for energy or health.

Cozy Grove’s concept of island design is creative, too. When the player arrives, the island is bleak and colorless, but as they advance through the game and continue to crafting, color expands across the island and players bring the island back to life. The landscapes have also been hand-drawn, showing a more pen and ink style to the graphics, similar to Cuphead.

Another unique feature of the game is that items are listed in the inventory with tags such as rarity and theme, and the NPCs have preferences on which items are placed near them. If an item is placed near an NPC that they do like, it will increase their heart rating and relationship with the player, and if the item is harvestable, it will yield better goods.

Similarly to Nook’s Cranny, there is a buy and sell feature in Cozy Grove, as a shop is run by a fox called Mr.Kit, and stock changes daily. This encourages players to collect items and search for rarities to sell in exchange for clothing and recipes.

While Cozy Grove and Animal Crossing have many striking similarities, fans should be excited about its in-depth storyline and more rewarding experience with its NPC characters. The game is built on achievement rather than relaxation, and having a reward system for playing will certainly keep players interested in sticking out and finding out more about the spirits over the upcoming months.
