Animal Crossing Finally Makes Eating Useful

With the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the various fruits that players can gather can now be used for a cool new feature. In the previous Animal Crossing titles, fruit was mainly used as a quick way to earn bells in the beginning, as players would run around shaking trees to gather up fruit and sell to Tom Nook. Fruit could also be used as a gift, as other villagers occasionally ask the player if they could fetch a certain fruit for them. Plus, there are five kinds of fruit a town can start with, and selling non-native fruit yields more Bells. This provides an incentive to visit and trade with friends.

But in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, eating fruit now has a powerful new effect. Eating a piece of fruit gives the player village a temporary boost in strength, and players can store up to ten power strikes at one time by eating ten pieces of fruit. Players can then use the power trikes to cut down or uproot trees in one swing or break a boulder with one hit of a shovel. But players beware, as destroying rocks or trees this way will not drop any materials, losing out on the chance to gather precious resources when starting out.

When starting out in New Horizons, players are fairly limited in terms of what they can do on Day One. Enterprising players may begin to pick fruit from the surrounding trees, or gather shells and sticks to start paying off the ludicrous amount of Bells Tom Nook charges the player for moving in.

After eating a piece of fruit, a small counter will display in the top-left corner of the screen, noting how many power strikes a player has stored up. This may come as a surprise to some players, as fruit traditionally did nothing when eaten. Players can use power strikes to chop down or uproot trees in one swing, or to break rocks with one shovel strike.

The trade-off is that, when a tree or rock is destroyed with a power strike, no materials will drop. The only exception to this is if a Bell-generating boulder is destroyed, as, in this case, all the of the Bells contained will drop for the player to pick up. Early on, players should try to avoid using power strikes, as the materials that drop from trees and boulders are pretty important when making your first set of tools.

The worst time to eat fruit and store up power strikes is when visiting Mystery Islands since these islands are great sources of wood and stone when starting out. Missing out on this extra change to gather materials can slow down the player’s progress. Really, the best time to use these boosts is when cleaning up the island, and especially for clearing out space for new arrivals. Another great use for power strikes is to help save a tool’s durability if you plan on changing the island’s layout to fit your personal tastes.

This new feature may not be useful in every situation, but it’s a nice way to add another purpose to the fruits that have been part of the series since the beginning. You can keep selling fruit Tom Nook (after all, you need to pay off your debt somehow) and making sure your neighbors are getting their daily dose of fruit, but make sure to keep some for yourself. Tidying up an island is pretty hard work, and nothing helps keep you going like some fresh fruit.
