Following the recent reveal of the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC, Nintendo has expanded on what were to happen if users were to unsubscribe from the upcoming Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The Happy Home Paradise DLC was recently shown to be included in the upcoming NSO Expansion Pack along with the addition of Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis titles.

Happy Home Paradise was announced in the most recent Animal Crossing: New Horizons direct as paid DLC. It features the same type of gameplay as Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer on the 3DS, where players can design villagers vacation homes per their specifications. Players will be able to use various new techniques that they couldn’t use on the main island, such as soundscapes and lighting, and these techniques can be applied for customizing the player’s home on their island. There will also be exclusive items players can purchase on the archipelago that they can take home to their island.

But what if a user unsubscribes from the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion pack and loses access to the Happy Home Paradise DLC? Eurogamer’s coverage of the upcoming Animal Crossing: New Horizons update has Nintendo respond to that question. A Nintendo spokesperson stated that players would still be able to access the items and design techniques gained from the Happy Home Paradise DLC, but they would be unable to access the archipelago and create new vacation homes. The only ways players can regain access to the archipelago would be to purchase the DLC separately from the NSO Expansion Pack or renew their membership.

This policy concerning DLC could potentially set a precedent for future Nintendo Switch Online expansions. If another NSO expansion plan with more classic games were to release in the future that would include more DLC from games, it’s likely that a similar sort of policy will be in place. This does make it so that players can at least own the benefits gained from the Happy Home Paradise DLC. However, players who gain Happy Home Paradise through the NSO Expansion Pack will not have their own copy of the DLC, since many of its features can be revoked. The only surefire way to own the DLC is to purchase it separately.

The topic of game ownership is one that continues to be hotly debated. It’s one of many aspects systems such as Google Stadia have been criticized for. But even though players can still keep aspects such as items from the Happy Home Paradise DLC in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the loss of access to core mechanics from the DLC could still be troubling for some players. Keeping the items and design techniques is still good to have if players unsubscribe from the pricey NSO Expansion Pack membership, but if players want to continue designing vacation homes in Animal Crossing: New Horizons without owning the NSO Expansion Pack, the DLC will have to be purchased separately.
