Animal Crossing & More Video Game Museums Judged By Real Museum Curators
2020 was a great year for games – and their museums. Now, several real museum curators cast a critical eye over these fictional establishments.

Some of 2020’s most popular video games, including Animal Crossing: New Horizons and The Last Of Us Part II, offered players virtual museums, and now real-world museum curators have weighed in on the design of these digital knowledge centers. While it was a bumpy year for most, it turned out to be a bumper year for the video games industry and the worlds it had to offer in 2020.
One of the biggest hits of the year was Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Released towards the start of the year, it offered a tranquil place for gamers to escape to when real world events got a bit too heavy. One of the most calming places on the Animal Crossing islands is almost certainly the vast museum that players create with the assistance of Blathers, the insect-fearing owl curator. While this museum may well be one of the most famous in gaming last year, it was not the only one to show up on consoles. Along with Animal Crossing, museums were also found in Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Final Fantasy VII Remake, to name a few.
This museum trend was noticed by YouTube channel MinnMaxShow, which enlisted the help of real-life museum curators, including the chair of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Space History department, to weigh in on these popular in-game musems. All curators involved in this video brought their own expertise, and they spotted things that would not jump out to the average layman. From the way the carpet in Final Fantasy VII Remake directs the player down a specific pathway (as well as its lack of trash cans), to the way the museum in The Last of Us Part II makes the leap from dinosaurs to space travel through only one doorway.
Several of the museums received praise from the curators. Despite being fictional, the fictional Wyoming Museum of Science and History from The Last of Us Part II was lauded for its attention to detail. Glossing over the fact that there are potentially dangerous skylights in the game museum’s ceiling, the Apollo lunar rover and the command module were specifically praised for their realism. The museum within Animal Crossing met with appreciation for its floor design, although the mixing of dinosaurs from different historical periods did raise some eyebrows from one expert.
While last year saw the video games industry soar in popularity, it has been painfully difficult for the tourism industry, including museums. With museums generally being non-profit organizations, fundraising and donations are all that has been keeping their heads above water. Many of these establishments may be tragically forced to shut because of the reduced footfall over the past year, so the featured museum curators also urge viewers to support their local museums in safe ways until it’s once again safe to visit them.
Hopefully, this year will see a change in fortune for the world’s places of public learning. However, until COVID-19 and other novel coronavirus strains are brought under control, the digital museum offerings of video games are still currently the best option for many.
