Animal Crossing characters have always been diverse in their personality types and catchphrases. When Animal Crossing: New Horizons came out, it wasn’t just better in graphics and activities, it was better in humor. Villagers are not afraid to speak their mind, and they sometimes think and say the wackiest things.
When gamers engage with their islanders every day, it can get monotonous, but if they are persistent, the responses can get quite entertaining. Villagers are not the only ones with good one-liners or odd remarks that make gamers laugh out loud; island visitors like Gulliver, Celeste, and Redd provide hilarious quips, too.
10 Alfonso’s Confidence
Alfonso, a lazy alligator who sometimes lacks self-confidence, will ask players their opinion on his outfit, and, when they give a supportive answer, he may realize he has nothing to fear. He’ll sometimes respond to a compliment with, “Oh, wow! You think it’s GREAT? Man, ya put my fears to bed AND ya tucked ’em in!”

Some of the time, villagers will say things specifically relevant to their character, but, most of the time, villager sayings are based on their personality type, be they lazy, smug, preppy, etc.
Lazy islanders have a tendency to talk to the bugs in their homes. For example, Biskit received a bug as a gift and responded with, “I can’t wait to introduce her to the other bugs in my house! Well, to the bugs on the floor. The bugs in my walls are being jerks this week.”
8 Mott’s Abs
Jock villagers are pretty much always hilarious because of how intensely they talk about working out. But, an especially funny conversation between him and Pashmina showed him saying, “Ah ha! You’ve discovered the wonders of the washboard. The appeal of the ab.” Seems like when other islanders catch on to working out, the jocks can be quite encouraging and funny.
7 Gulliver
Even though Gulliver is an island visitor, he has some of the best lines when gamers find him on the beach. He cracks jokes for the most part, and, sometimes he shares how disoriented he is from falling overboard by saying things like “good thing your head is so huge. Makes it pretty easy to identify your blurry silhouette.” (Is he picking on the player themselves, or the animation style of the video game?) Either way, it’s one of his funniest lines.
6 Zucker’s Birthday Letter
Zucker, a lazy octopus and favorite of many fans, is not lacking in accidental humor. He sends a letter after the player has stopped by for his birthday, and he seems to struggle with auto-correct.
His letter starts out sweet as a thank-you note for the present the player brings on his birthday, but he accidentally says, “I licked my present,” when he really meant ‘liked.’ It only gets more chaotic as his letter finishes with, “How do I errse words? OHNO SOmtheign is…” signed “wrongineedanadultZucker.”
5 Would You Rather
Oftentimes, the player will find villagers talking to each other, and sometimes they will include them in the conversation with a little game of ‘Would You Rather.’
The most commonly asked and, without a doubt, the funniest is, “would you rather… lick a fish or bite a worm? We can’t decide.” A lot of lazy villagers think about bugs and fish, but this joke spans all the islanders.
4 Adorable Round Head
When players run into villagers of the same personality type, they may say the same things when they’ve missed you or are mad at another islander.
Alfonso, like many lazy villagers, has a tendency to miss the player when they’re gone and will let them know by saying, “I was just thinking about you… Thinking about seeing your face… Your big ol’ adorable round head.”
3 O’Hare’s Arms
It seems like, around Halloween time, villager dreams get a little more creepy, but that doesn’t stop them from divulging their secrets to players.
O’Hare, a smug bunny villager, describes a dream he had, but then follows it up with, “and then waited for my arms to heal. Did you know that no one can hear me scream from my basement?” A creepy yet hilarious way to end a story if ever there was one.
2 Agnes’ Conversations
Agnes, a sisterly pig, likes to debate fashion, hobbies, and bugs, but an especially hilarious conversation with jock villager Boone led her to say, “I’m gonna level with you… Those words don’t mean anything to me.”
One of the best times to catch villagers saying the funniest things is when they’re in a conversation with another villager, especially one whose personality is radically different than their own.
1 Breaking The Fourth Wall
A recent Tik Tok reveals that Biskit, an empty-eyed, lazy dog, breaks through the fourth wall and has oddly specific realizations about the game. In his breakthrough, he asks, “and does Tom Nook make ANY kind of sense to you?! Yeah, I’ll buy your seashells so you can give me back my own money to pay off a house I’m selling to you!” He blames it on the six bags of chips and weird dreams he had the night before.
Biskit isn’t the only one to figure it out, either. Erik, Beau, and other villagers have also broken through their own simulation, making this the most hilarious thing islanders will say.
