Since Nintendo released Animal Crossing: New Horizons in March for the Switch, it’s become an award-winning, fan-favorite sim. The company is still releasing regular updates to keep current and veteran players invested, while also offering more incentive for curious newcomers to pick up the title and give it a shot.

Although it sounds like a dream to have a private island, running the show is no easy feat. Here are some tips, tricks and strategies for kickstarting island life in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Character Creation & Customization in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Creating a character in New Horizons is as easy as picking a name and birthdate. These cannot be changed, so players should think hard on whether they want to make an avatar of themselves or create a character. Names and birthdates appear on player passports, which means everyone in the Animal Crossing community can potentially see it. Plus, villagers will throw players birthday parties.

Characters can be customized with different options for skin tone, hairstyles, eye shape and color, etc. These can be changed at anytime in-game, as long as the player has access to a mirror or vanity (which can be crafted, purchased, gifted, or found). Players can also unlock additional hairstyles and colors by exchanging Nook Miles at the kiosk in Resident Services.

Island Options in New Horizons

Players will be asked to choose an island in either the Northern or Southern Hemisphere. In-game times and dates sync with the player’s Nintendo Switch settings and choosing a hemisphere designates the order of the seasons. Most players opt to have their island correspond with their real-life location, but some go with the opposite for the extra escapism of frolicking in a summer island while it snows in real life.

After choosing a hemisphere, players can choose one of four island maps. Most everything can be changed with terraforming, which unlocks after K.K. Slider performs for the first time. However, some aspects cannot be moved: Resident Services and the plaza, the airport, the pier and the river mouths. Players may need to restart the game a few times to find a map they want, based on the placement of these areas.

Native Fruits & Flowers in Animal Crossing

A flyover shot of the island before landing gives players the chance to spot some fruit-bearing trees. Islands get assigned one of five native fruits at random: Cherries, peaches, pears, apples and oranges. Native fruit sells for 100 Bells at Nook’s Cranny, while non-native fruits sell for 500 Bells.

Players also receive one of eight flower types: Windflowers, cosmos, mums, roses, lilies, tulips, hyacinths or pansies. Flowers don’t sell for much whether they’re native or non-native, standard colors or hybridized — but they can make the island look extra nice when there’s a large variety of planted flowers.

One quick way to make some Bells is to bring home and plant any fruits that may be found when visiting other islands, then harvest the trees and sell. Some Nook Miles islands will bear a different fruit or new flowers, but players can also coordinate with each other to trade native fruits and flowers.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Starting Villagers

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has nearly 400 villagers to choose from, but only two personality types are guaranteed for starting villagers: Jocks and sisterly villagers. There are 55 jock villagers in the game and 24 sisterly villagers. Although players don’t have to keep every villager forever and they will eventually invite eight more to live on their private island, if they’re truly unhappy with their two starter villagers, it may be a good idea to reroll and try again.

After the player and their starting villagers have set down their tents (which will eventually become houses), Tom Nook will hold a ceremony and ask the player to name the island. This cannot be changed, so choose wisely.

Placing Structures

Each player in New Horizons starts the game with a tent, which they can eventually upgrade to a six-room house (including an attic and basement). The two starting villagers also start with tents, which are upgraded to reflect the status of the player’s home. The next three villagers get basic “starter homes” based on their personality types. From then on, each villager gets a fully customized house that’s exclusive to them.

Aside from Resident Services and the airport, players can choose where to put their home, their villagers’ homes, the shops and the museum. Some players put all of their structures on the beach or in one area, then move them when they unlock terraforming. Others carefully plan where to put each structure from the jump.

Moving a house or structure costs 50,000 Bells, so players should be aware of the cost before diving into island renovations. It also takes a full day for each structure to move, and inclines and bridges cannot be built when a building is being moved.

Eating & Excreting in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Eating fruit, mushrooms, pumpkins, candy or other food items gives Animal Crossing players a stamina boost that allows them to perform feats like smashing rocks (which will then make those rocks respawn somewhere else the next day) or digging up trees. Should a player wish to relocate a tree, just find some fruit to munch on and pluck that tree out with a shovel. The tree can then be planted, fully-grown, elsewhere on the island.

If players accidentally consume food and don’t want to smash a rock or dig up a tree, they can sit on a toilet and wait until their character declares, “And that takes care of that!” This will remove any additional stamina boosts so the player character is back to normal.

Plant Money Trees & Harvest Resources

Each New Horizons island randomly spawns a glowing spot each day. Players can dig up bags of bells from these spots, then replant them — while the hole is still glowing — to create a money tree sapling. Money trees eventually spawn bags of Bells that triple the amount the player buried, though this only happens once. Once the bags are shaken from the tree, it becomes a regular hardwood tree.

While it may be tempting to plant the maximum (a single inventory slot holds up to 99,000 Bells), the safest bet is still to plant 10,000 Bells for a return of 30,000. Some players have managed to get more than this, but it seems to be a glitch at time of writing.

As players are checking for glowing spots and more around their islands, they should also take the time to harvest resources like wood, iron, stone, clay and branches. These are needed for crafting and can make a huge difference to the fun of daily play..
