A vigilant Animal Crossing: New Horizons player recently shared a trick that lets players know if the owl Celeste happens to be on their island. Nintendo’s latest installment in the social simulator series launched its only paid DLC content earlier this month with Happy Home Paradise along with update 2.0, a free addition that added plenty of extra content on its own.

One notable gameplay mechanic unique to Animal Crossing: New Horizons is that the game takes place in real-time, meaning the time of day and date in-game is the same as whatever it is on an individual’s Nintendo Switch. The other villagers on a player’s island act accordingly and events can unfold even when no active play is taking place. Celeste is a New Horizons character that is especially affected by this mechanic as she only appears on a player’s island only between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m. on nights when a meteor shower will take place. What can make things even more difficult during those hours is that she roams the island, making her somewhat difficult to track down for her unique inventory.

Luckily Reddit user InternetRealistic27 shared a clever “hack” that lets players know if Celeste is on their island in the first place. By doing a group stretch after 7 p.m., a player can easily see if the owl is indeed roaming about. This gameplay mechanic from previous series installments was introduced to New Horizons as part of update 2.0 and can be performed at any time during the day. Many villagers will join the player during this activity, including Celeste if she is on the island.

Commenters on InternetRealistic27’s post pointed out that there is another way for players to figure out of the owl will be present before her normally scheduled roaming time. She can be found in The Roost during the hours leading up to 7 p.m. Even though she is an owl, it would seem Celeste still needs some coffee before she spends the night roaming a player’s island.

Update 2.0 brought a significant amount of content to an already expansive game and now it appears New Horizons players are discovering some of the subtle gameplay elements included in the addition. Nuances like Celeste joining a nighttime stretch or a Pergola keeping wasps at bay are little details that add entire layers to how players approach the game. If the expansiveness of the base game was any indication, then the Animal Crossing: New Horizons community is bound to find plenty more hidden mechanics brought about by update 2.0 as well as Happy Home Paradise for those who purchased it.
