A crafty Animal Crossing: New Horizons player recently tried their hand at recreating a classic Pokémon urban legend from Pokémon Red and Blue. Released in 1998 for the Nintendo Game Boy, Pokémon Red and Blue were the first video game installments in the overwhelmingly successful franchise developed by Game Freak.

Considered to be one of the most infamous myths in the Pokémon games, the urban legend involved the mythical Pokémon Mew, which was unobtainable in Pokémon Red and Blue via normal gameplay. Rumor had it that Mew could be acquired in the game if a player was able to reach the truck that was parked near the S.S. Anne in Vermillion City. The vehicle was only accessible via using the skill Surf, which allowed movement around the waters near the S.S. Anne. As the peculiar placement of the truck was never explained by developers, players spread rumors that this was one of the ways to catch Mew in Pokémon Red and Blue without the use of glitches.

Reddit user Nara_Hale shared a picture of their Animal Crossing recreation of the classic Pokémon Red and Blue urban myth. In the picture, a truck can be seen parked next to a river, surrounded by turnips. Surprisingly, trapped under the back wheel of the truck is the mythical Psychic-type Pokémon from Generation 1, Mew. As there are no Pokémon items in New Horizons, Nara_Hale had to get crafty in order to bring Mew into the game, which was achieved by using the custom design tool, allowing them to make a custom Mew pattern to place in the scene.

Earlier last week, Animal Crossing’s 2.0 update was released early, bringing with it a large content release that also marked the last of the game’s free updates. Thanks to the New Horizons 2.0 update, Nara_Hale was able to utilize the newly introduced vehicles on their island, which included the delivery truck used in their Pokémon recreation. Some Redditors chimed in to express their alarm at the predicament that Mew had gotten into, as it looked like the Pokémon was involved in an unfortunate car accident, rather than waiting to be acquired by a cunning Pokémon trainer

Nara_Hale has certainly put the newly introduced items in Animal Crossing to excellent use, bringing to life a classic Pokémon myth that many fans of the franchise are sure to remember. With the enormous variety of new items introduced in the game’s latest update, along with the early release of Happy Home Paradise, players are sure to have even more options to get designing in New Horizons.
