Though remakes and reboots are all the rage these days – there have been so many horror movie reboots, we’re starting to see reboots of reboots – we’ve yet to see the return of many classic animated TV shows.

But with Mr. Peabody and Sherman having recently transitioned to the big screen and Genndy Tartakovsky developing a 3D-animated adaptation of Popeye, it was only a matter of time before the king of all sitcom cartoons – The Flintstones – got the feature film treatment as well.

According to THR, this animated reboot is coming courtesy of writer Chris Henchy and Executive Producers Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, all three of whom previously worked on The Other Guys (starring Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg) and The Campaign (starring Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis). There’s no word on whether or not Ferrell might provide voice work as well – perhaps as Fred Flintstone himself – but it seems like that would be the ideal outcome for Warner Bros.

Of course, this won’t be the first time Fred, Wilma, Pebbles, Barnie, Betty, Bamm-Bamm, and the rest of the prehistoric gang have made the transition to the big screen.

In 1994, The Flintstones was adapted as a live-action major motion picture starring John Goodman (as Fred), Rick Moranis (as Barney), Elizabeth Perkins (as Wilma), and Rosie O’Donnell (as Betty). It actually made quite a bit of money and was followed up by a much, much less successful (as in, not at all) prequel titled The Flinstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000), which featured none of the original main cast.

We can probably presume this upcoming animated reboot will not be traditionally animated, as the Flintstones always have been, but rather 3D-animated, as almost every major animated movie is these days. This might not sit well with traditionalists and older fans of the property, but it’s not likely to come as much of a surprise.

The last time a Flinstones reboot was in the works, Seth MacFarlane was bringing the series back to television on FOX. Alas, the project eventually fizzled out and never made it past the scripting stage due to a lack of excitement around the script. Hopefully, this cinematic reboot fares a bit better.

What say you, Screen Ranters? Are you okay with a Flinstones reboot from the guys who brought you The Other Guys? Drop us a line in the comments.
