Anne With An E: 10 Things That Make No Sense About Marilla

Marilla Cuthbert is Anne’s adoptive mother in this series and while she’s pretty straightforward, a lot of things about her don’t quite add up.

Marilla Cuthbert is Anne’s stern adoptive mother in Anne With An E. She is reluctant to take Anne in at first but decides to give her a chance at Matthew’s request. As the series progresses, Marilla comes to love Anne above all else, but she can still be severe with her at times.

Much of Marilla’s past is shrouded in mystery, which can make her character interesting, but also hard to understand. Marilla is hard to sway, yet quick to anger; she is both tolerant and not. Some of her unique qualities are natural complexities and nuances, but other things about her don’t make sense.

10 Her Relationship With John Blythe

Marilla is tight-lipped about her past, especially her experiences with romance. Through a series of flashbacks, viewers come to learn of her past relationship with John Blythe, Gilbert’s father.

John asked Marilla to join him in his travels, but she refused, which seems to be the cause of their breakup. Marilla implies that she regrets her decision, but it’s unclear what influenced her and why she never made amends with John when he returned to Avonlea.

9 Why She Wants To Adopt

It’s Marilla’s idea to adopt a child in the first place, but when Anne shows up, she seems to oppose the idea. Yes, she asked for a boy, but she specifically wanted to adopt a boy, not hire him as a farmhand.

The idea seems to have been that the boy could help around the house and the farm while living with them as their child. Matthew says that it’s because Marilla worries about him, but Marilla could simply have hired a farmhand – why a child? Everything about her in season 1 suggests that she has no patience for children.

8 Her Ambitions

Marilla doesn’t seem to have too much going on in her life. She is good at cooking and enters her creations at the festival, but other than that, she doesn’t have any goals or ambitions in life.

What exactly has she spent her days doing all these years? Sure, she takes care of the house, but this doesn’t seem like a very fulfilling lifestyle. It was common in that era for women to be housewives, but Marilla isn’t married and doesn’t have any children until Anne, so surely the workload couldn’t have kept her so busy that she didn’t also want to pursue other passions.

7 Her Friendship With Rachel

Marilla and Rachel are salt and pepper. Marilla hardly has the patience for Rachel, and even openly despises her at times. Even in the first episode, Marilla only reluctantly lets her in.

Rachel doesn’t seem to value Marilla except to have some of her tea and sweets. Rachel is a gossip, but Marilla isn’t one to join in. Marilla even mentions that Rachel has teased her since they were girls, so why they are still friends makes no sense.

6 Her Irrational Fear Of The Miꞌkmaq

A fear of anything different or unknown is understandable, but Marilla goes too far with Anne’s relations with the local Mi’kmaq. Marilla is actually surprisingly accepting throughout the series. It takes her a while to appreciate Anne, but once her eyes are opened up, she’s quick to accept Bash and Miss Stacy, for example.

In season 3, Marilla forbids Anne from seeing Ka’kwet or visiting her village again. Even though she claims it’s because she wishes to protect Anne because she loves her, this doesn’t really make sense given her past acceptance of outsiders. She becomes uncharacteristically enraged when she learns that Anne has been visiting the Mi’kmaq, and it’s a little unclear why.

5 Why She Wants To Be In Charge Of Parenting

Marilla makes it clear from the start that she will take charge in the parenting department. She intends to instill discipline, while Matthew, if left to his own devices, would have spoiled Anne but shown her a lot of tender care.

Marilla doesn’t even want to keep Anne when she meets her, so why she wants to parent her is unclear. In fact, she later mentions that she never understood why others wanted children or what the fuss was about.

4 Her Headaches

Early in the show, it’s hinted that Marilla fears becoming bedridden like her mother. Later in the show, Marilla suddenly falls ill with headaches, dizziness, and blurred vision.

The onset of this sensation is rapid and unexpected. It doesn’t appear that Marilla is more stressed than at any other particular time, and when she gets glasses, everything seems to be better. The condition is never brought up again, but it’s given an ominous feel when Marilla first experiences the symptoms.

3 Her Attitude To Romance

Marilla has spent her whole life living with her brother, Matthew, which some townsfolk consider strange. They judge her for it, even though there’s nothing wrong with her decision.

As Anne says, what could possibly be wrong with spending one’s life with a person they love? What doesn’t quite make sense, however, is Marilla’s attitude to romance. Why does she actively avoid it her whole life after the John Blythe affair?

2 Doesn’t Look For The Brooch

Despite warming up to Anne and growing to trust her, Marilla is quick to judge her when the brooch goes missing in the first episode. She goes straight to Anne’s room to question her about it.

She doesn’t believe Anne for a second, despite how distressed she looks. When Anne doesn’t own up either way, Marilla vows to send her away – but why doesn’t she at least look for the brooch first?

1 Inconsistencies Accepting Others

Marilla is unwilling to accept Anne as she is for a very long time, which can be put down to her conventional upbringing. She has very strong opinions and clings to old traditions, but Anne makes her question them.

Later, Marilla is very open-minded when she meets Bash. Though she’s a little startled at first, Marilla swiftly invites him to join the Cuthberts for Christmas dinner. Similarly, she immediately admires Miss Stacy and adores Mary, but she won’t accept Ka’kwet, who is completely harmless and is even a friend of Anne’s.
