Anne With An E Characters Ranked By Intelligence

Created by Moira Walley-Beckett, Anne With An E is an adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s beloved Anne of Green Gables book series. The Netflix show is much grittier than the original story, showing the harsh realities of life in nineteenth-century Canada. Anne, along with many other characters, face prejudice and discrimination in an unequal society.

The issues explored in the inspirational story are relevant today, as sad as that may be. In any case, the series can teach viewers many valuable lessons about life and the way society works. Avonlea is home to some very clever characters, from academically devoted students to great teachers and mentors, and wisened older citizens.

10 Matthew Cuthbert

Matthew did not complete his education at school and did not pursue any tertiary studies, instead electing to work on the farm at Green Gables. Even though he doesn’t have an academic education, Matthew knows a thing or two.

He teaches Anne numerous valuable lessons and is also a guiding light for Marilla. He’s a source of stability in the Green Gables household, even if he isn’t very good at reading or helping Jerry become literate.

9 Sebastian “Bash” LaCroix

Bash has grown up under tough circumstances, being part of a hugely oppressed group of society in the nineteenth century. People of color were rarely allowed to be educated in the same space as white people, though Bash was raised in Trinidad, where his mother worked for a wealthy white family.

Their relationship is seriously strained, and it seems that Bash worked from a young age. He may not know the answers to math equations, but he knows how to work, how to treat others with respect, and how to navigate a world of prejudice.

8 Jerry Baynard

Jerry is one of the few other characters in the show who don’t have an education. He works for the Cuthberts just to help his family get by. He doesn’t know what luxury is, but he’s happy in his life.

However, later in the show, he decides to take his education into his own hands. With some help from Anne, he teaches himself to read and write, though he doesn’t really understand the meaning behind the words he’s learning.

7 Diana Barry

Diana attends school with plans to forego a university education in favor of Finishing School. However, as she grows, she realizes that this is not what she wants. Her traditional, conservative parents want her to marry well, but she thinks she wants something more from life.

She passes her exam to get into Queen’s, but she’s still quite daft about other things. For one, she’s cruelly insensitive to Jerry’s feelings, as well as her sister’s, and is a bystander when other girls bully Anne or say bad things about her or Miss Stacy. In fact, she sometimes defends them. In short, sometimes Diana just lacks common sense.

6 Anne Shirley-Cuthbert

Anne, the protagonist, is intelligent in her own right. She has a wild imagination, a great appreciation for literature, and has been reading books from a very young age. Even so, she can be oblivious and insensitive a lot of the time.

Regardless, she’s one of the smartest students in school. She and Gilbert are constantly competing against each other, and together, they top the class and get into the universities of their choice. Outside of the classroom, Anne probably isn’t the most intelligent of characters, often acting on a whim without any forethought. As a result, she often hurts others.

5 Marilla Cuthbert

Marilla has chosen a life for herself that many other women look down upon and consider lonely, but she doesn’t share their opinion. Even though she could have tried to pursue some sort of career, she decided to live with her brother, whom she loves.

Marilla usually knows what’s best, though she sometimes lets her emotions overcome her. In any case, she’s very witty, and she teaches Anne almost everything she knows outside of the classroom. She has a wise, all-knowing aura about her, and learns to be a great mother even though she has little experience with children.

4 Cole Mackenzie

Cole is a skilled artist and a deep and sensitive boy who sees the world in a different way than anyone else. He learns his fair share of lessons throughout the show and also teaches other people a few things about themselves.

Even after suffering abuse from Billy, Cole is mature and clever enough to apologize to him for his own brash behavior and encourage Billy to consider why he enjoys putting others down. Cole also doesn’t let Mr. Phillips get to him, even though he’s horrible to Cole. Cole is also the one to remind Anne about her self-worth in season 3 when they’re in Nova Scotia.

3 Winifred Rose

Gilbert meets Winifred in Charlottetown when he’s working with the doctor to advance his studies in medicine. She’s a funny young woman who knows a lot about medicine but is also the one to teach Gilbert about the process of courting.

She’s witty, unself-conscious, and one of the very few females working in medicine at this time and place. She certainly knows more of the world than Gilbert does, so they’re not quite matched in their intellect. She also fails to realize that Gilbert doesn’t really have feelings for her.

2 Gilbert Blythe

Gilbert is Mr. Phillips’s brightest student, at least until Anne arrives and catches up on the learning content. He tops the class in every subject and even tries to do extra schoolwork where possible. He’s an ambitious academic with goals to discover something new in the field of medicine.

Gilbert is also one of the most mature (most of the time) and emotionally intelligent characters of the series. For instance, when Winnie is upset that he is not going to propose to her, he points out that it would have been much worse if he’d realized his feelings a week later, or a year.

1 Miss Muriel Stacy

Miss Stacy is the teacher who comes to replace Mr. Phillips after his dismissal. She is a welcome change who treats the students as real people and lets them live and grow as children should.

She assists Gilbert in advancing his studies to pursue medicine, while also taking the time to help Anne both academically and outside of the classroom. She is wise to ignore Rachel’s attempts to marry her off to the first man who will accept her unconventional ways and handles every situation she’s in with grace and intelligence.
