Ant-Man 3 writer Jeff Loveness celebrates the film wrapping production with a Shakespeare-inspired social media post. Best known for his work on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Rick and Morty, Loveness currently holds the sole writing credit on what is his first feature film. The Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, officially titled Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, is set to hit theaters on July 28, 2023.

Following a significant scheduling shakeup by Disney, director Peyton Reed’s third film in the Ant-Man franchise is the furthest out of the named Marvel projects, meaning that most of the story details will have to be kept under wraps for some time. While it will act as a sequel to 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp and grapple with the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, it’s unclear just when in the timeline the film it set, or whether any of the projects releasing before it carry consequences for its characters. What is known, however, is that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has already completed principal photography, with Reed confirming the news earlier this week.

Following his director’s announcement, Loveness commemorates the milestone by getting existential about the state of his career. Sharing a photo of him holding an Ant-Man helmet in a clear reference to Hamlet’s “Alas poor Yorick…” moment, the writer begins by simply stating the facts that Ant-Man 3 has wrapped and that he has written it. From there, however, he humorously draws some major conclusions about the nature of the medium that get a bit too specific to his recent experience:

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will see the return of Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly as the titular heroes, along with Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer as their predecessors. Kathryn Newton will replace Emma Fuhrmann as an older version of Scott Lang’s daughter Cassie, while Jonathan Majors will play future MCU big-bad Kang the Conqueror, after having appeared as a variant of the character in the Loki season 1 finale. Additionally, Bill Murray will play an undisclosed role, which he seemingly accidentally got too candid about in an interview for a German-language publication.

While the first instinct of most Marvel fans is likely to laugh with Loveness, with so little revealed about Ant-Man 3 so far, it’s worth teasing out potential clues from the writer’s reference. Since Hamlet is holding a skull in the famous Shakespeare scene, it’s possible that the size-altering hero kicks the bucket in his trilogy-capper, with Rudd likely nearing the end of his initial MCU contract. The true long-term impact of the film could be to position Cassie as his successor, with many fans theorizing that Kevin Feige and Co. are building to the Young Avengers team that includes her in the comics. While that kind of messaging from Loveness is unlikely, it’s not impossible, and viewers should prepare for the stakes of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania to be higher than the series’ previous installments.
