Anya TaylorJoy Was Originally Cast In Different Last Night In Soho Role

Anya Tayl0r-Joy was originally cast in a different role in Last Night In Soho. Joy will star opposite Matt Smith and Thomasin McKenzie in Edgar Wright’s follow-up to Baby Driver. Last Night In Soho follows McKenzie’s Eloise, a young student who moves to Soho to attend the a prestigious London fashion school. When she finds that doesn’t necessarily fit in with her peers, Eloise escapes into what may or may not be a fantasy and an era she loves the most – the 1960’s. There she meets her idol, Sandie, an aspiring singer played by Joy, and Jack, Sandie’s malicious lover. Lines are blurred, though, when Eloise finds herself in Sandie’s body at times and as the lines between time and reality begin to blur, Eloise begins to be haunted by a ghostly presence.

Early reviews for the film out of the Venice International Film Festival praised Wright’s take, saying that it goes more into full-blown horror than any of his other previous films. Additionally, a second trailer for Last Night In Soho gave more clarity to the film’s plot, revealing that Eloise witnesses Sandie’s murder, possibly at the hands of Jack, who is still alive in the present day. After its world premiere in Venice, Last Night In Soho is slated to release domestically in October, but the film almost looked a lot different.

Total Film reports that Joy was originally cast in the role of Eloise that eventually went to McKenzie. Leading up to production, though, Wright realized that Joy was more of a fit for the role of Sandie. The director described the Queen’s Gambit actress as “such a chameleon,” one that would be better suited to the role of the 60’s chanteuse.

Joy would’ve been perfect in either role – the actress has shown that she is one of the most exciting up-and-comers working today, but so, too, is McKenzie. The chance to see them acting opposite each other is an exciting one after seeing them try out various roles over the last few years. Joy has shined in Netflix miniseries The Queen’s Gambit and films like The Witch, while McKenzie earned praise for her roles in Leave No Trace and Jojo Rabbit.

Both Joy and McKenzie also have several major projects coming up. McKenzie is set to appear in Jane Campion’s return to the big screen with Netflix’s The Power of the Dog starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kristen Dunst. Joy has three projects lined up, including a collaboration with The Witch director Robert Eggers titled The Northman. She will also star in David O. Russell’s upcoming untitled film before taking on the role of Furiousa in a Mad Max: Fury Road prequel. First, though, Last Night In Soho will hit theaters October 29, giving audiences a chance to see two actresses at the top of their game.
