Apex Legends has maintained a steady place within the battle royale game scene over the past couple years, with its blend of ability-based Legends and buttery-smooth movement striking a chord with many fans. Screen Rant recently attended a preview event for Apex Legends: Escape, with the Respawn team giving an hour-long presentation of the new additions to the game followed by a hands-on segment to check out everything in action. Respawn showcased a lot of exciting things coming in Season 11 of Apex Legends, including a brand new map, playable Legend Ash, and the introduction of the C.A.R. SMG to the Apex Games.

The biggest feature coming to Apex Legends in Season 11 is the inclusion of the map Storm Point, the fourth, and biggest, map that the game has ever seen. Billed as being 15% larger than the current largest map (World’s Edge) in terms of playable surfaces, Storm Point is a beautiful arena set on the planet Gaia that features a diverse amount of landscapes for players to explore. Storm Point takes a page from World’s Edge in this regard by throwing all kinds of environments at players, from tropical island formations to tall mountain ranges that keep things from growing stale.

One of the interesting things about Storm Point is that almost all of the Redeploy Balloons have been removed, being replaced with new devices called Gravity Cannons. Similar to the Man Cannons found in Halo games, Gravity Cannons launch players great distances across Storm Point after they step into it while allowing for full control of weapons and Tactical abilities. It’s a much needed shake up to the traversal formula in Apex Legends, still allowing players to rotate across the map and outrun the storm in a completely different way.

Storm Point isn’t just an place for the Legends to do battle on, but also includes nests of Prowlers, and Spider eggs can be found throughout the map. The creatures aren’t too keen on coexisting with the Apex Legends, and will attack players who engage with their homes. Clearing a nest will reward a team with a random assortment of consumables, weapon attachment upgrades, ammo and a very small portion of damage to help scale up Armor. The creatures fit in seamlessly to the map and don’t disrupt the core Battle Royale gameplay of Apex Legends, as they only attack players who choose to go out of their way to interact with them.

There are 17 named locations for players to land at on Storm Point, with small camps and POIs scattered in between them for those looking for a more subtle landing spot. It seem that the map might be too big for its own good, but actually getting into Storm Point shows that, while large, the map contains many elements that help prevent it from feeling empty. Players are constantly moving across the map due to the Gravity Cannons and Tridents, while the addition of the Prowlers and Spiders presents opportunities for action when there aren’t teams around at the moment. Storm Point has the potential to be Apex Legends’ best map to date, and it will be intriguing to see what fans think of it.

A new season of Apex Legends usually means the addition of a new playable Legend, and Season 11’s Ash is set to be one of the coolest (and downright terrifying) Legends Respawn has released yet. A Simulacrum-like Revenant (a robot with the mind of a human), Ash once featured in Respawn’s Titanfall 2 as an antagonistic pilot and has been the announcer for Apex’s Arena mode since Season 9, but Season 11 marks her official appearance as a member of the Apex Games. Ash falls into the Offensive category of Legends, and her abilities set her up as a jack-of-all-trades character that allows her to lead her team into full-on assault.

Ash’s Passive ability is called Marked for Death, which allows the Simulacrum to locate the deathboxes of recently killed players simply by looking at her map. When Ash is in close proximity to one of the deathboxes, she is able to use her Data Knife once per box to find the team that attacked the fallen Legend, which will also appear on the player’s map. Legend Designer Devin Weiss described Ash’s Passive as tapping into the character’s “complicated relationship to death, because she’s mastered it in a way (as a Simulacrum),” and this mastery allows her “to gain advantages from the failures of the other competitors” to locate enemies quickly and figure out where their team should go to get into fights.

Ash’s Tactical ability is called Arc Snare, and sees the character throw out a projectile that shocks & deals damage to the first enemy it comes into contact with, tethering them to the ground. Players that move and shoot within the tether’s anchor range won’t be affected, but those who try to run outside of the area will be slowed down and pulled back towards the tether. In practice, it’s a bit like a throwable Wattson fence, stunning enemies for a short time and opening up an opportunity for Ash to get the jump on her foes.

Ash’s Ultimate ability is called Phase Breach, and will be very familiar to players as a modified sort of Wraith portal. The character wields a sword that can be used to tear a portal towards a targeted location, but Ash’s portal can only be used in one direction, as opposed to Wraith’s double-sided portal that can be taken back and forth. Movement through the portal begins near-instantaneously after it has been deployed, and other combatants have a brief amount of time to follow the character through. It was noted that Ash’s Phase Breach isn’t meant to be used in a stealthy fashion, and players will be warned via visual and audio cues that an Ash Portal has been opened up nearby.

Experiencing Ash in action during the playtest helped put into perspective how offense-oriented the character is, with Phase Breach especially standing out as something that can be used to create great flanking opportunities. All of Ash’s abilities felt balanced for the most part, with nothing of note sticking out that could warrant a potential nerf like Seer’s abilities during Season 10. Ash is shaping up to be a great addition to the Legends roster, and it will be exciting to see the types of plays Ash mains will make during the upcoming season as they utilize her full array of abilities to put pressure on opposing teams.

Apex Legends: Escape will also introduce the C.A.R. SMG to the Apex Games, which is a fan-favorite weapon from the Titanfall series. The C.A.R plays like any one of the other four SMGs in Apex Legends, with a fast rate of fire (supposedly faster than the Volt) and good hip fire accuracy, with a trade-off of slightly increased recoil. The biggest kicker with the C.A.R. is the inclusion of an Alt Fire mode that allows the gun to consume either Light or Heavy ammo. The C.A.R. can also be equipped with either a Light or Heavy Extended Mag, and the gun holds that extended amount of ammunition even when the magazine doesn’t match the ammo type.

This element of the C.A.R really opens up the way that loot management and attachment progression can be handled during a match, lessening the stress of players having to find a distinct type of ammo or magazine for the gun. In terms of how the C.A.R handles, it’s a solid gun that does reasonable damage in close-quarter fights like an SMG should. There’s nothing overtly broken about the gun either, which should be a relief to Apex Legends players that have experienced some of the overpowered weapons throughout the game’s lifespan. The C.A.R. SMG looks to have made a smooth transition from Titanfall to Apex Legends, and should find a solid place within the weapon meta.

Apex Legends: Escape looks to be an exciting season for the game. Storm Point provides a interesting new playground for Apex matches to unfold, Ash has the skillset & personality to potentially make her a fan favorite Legend, and the C.A.R. SMG’s unique Alt Fire elements presents a new weapon for players to hopefully enjoy. The future looks bright for Apex Legends, and players have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming Season 11.
