Apex Legends Is The Most Stressful FPS CSGO Is The Least Study Says

A recent study by the University of Leeds, UK says that CS:GO is the least stressful FPS game and Apex Legends is the most. Playing video games is one of the most popular ways to relax in the modern age, even President Biden relaxed by playing Mario Kart with his granddaughter over the typical favorite presidential pastime of playing golf.

Gaming is often challenging and can result in high-stress situations, especially in competitive games as most FPSs are. The amount of stress that a game can cause in a player does not necessarily equate to them being stressed outside of it, however. Perhaps having a source of frustration that is objectively low-stakes (for non-professional players at least) helps to distract people from the very real stresses in the rest of their lives. Whatever the reason why, people love to play games to relax, and with Mario Kart being more stressful than Dark Souls it is obviously not always easy to tell which games are the most stressful for their players.

To tackle just that question a study was performed by the University of Leeds, UK, in partnership with BetVictor. The study compared four popular FPS games by analyzing the heart rates of 32 players before and after their games and measuring their anxiety levels and blood pressure. A recent article by Dexerto discussed the findings of the study. All the players participating in the study were 20-26 years old and ranged in skill from “good” to “expert”. The post about the study on BetVictor’s blog included clips of gameplay from the study which marked the players’ heart rates at various noteworthy events.

The four games studied were Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Call of Duty: Warzone, PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds), and Apex Legends. What was found by the study was surprising: CS:GO was the best game for relieving stress with players exhibiting high-stress levels before the game and significantly reduced stress levels after. Apex Legends conversely, was the worst at relieving stress, with players showing the lowest decrease in stress after playing the game. In fact, Apex Legends players should be warned that the game demonstrated almost no movement on the graph, indicating that the game does little to relieve its players of stress at all.

This study provides some useful insight for gamers with stressful day jobs that just want to come home and unwind. And that insight is more than simply that Apex Legends is anxiety-inducing. Of the games studied CS:GO was the only one which showed an overall reduction in heart rate and all three of the other games were Battle Royales, which have a more uninterrupted possibility of danger. Furthermore, PUBG was right behind CS:GO in terms of the displayed dip in stress post-game. This study, in spite of its small sample size, gives a glimpse into what exactly it is that gets gamers pumping and what makes some games more stressful than others.
