Apex Legends Nintendo Switch Resolution & Frame Rate Confirmed

A developer interview has detailed the resolution and frame rate of Apex Legends on Nintendo Switch. The game was originally released on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2019; a Switch port wasn’t announced until later. Respawn then released a trailer showing Apex Legends gameplay on the Switch, making fans even more excited for today’s launch. While the game’s visuals looked very solid, many wondered if its actual live performance would be as impressive.

The Switch version of Apex Legends arrives today, and eager players are curious to see how its performance stacks up against other versions of the game. Though they’re always unique, Nintendo consoles have a notorious reputation for being underpowered. Though the Switch is no exception, players are hoping that the game’s performance is able to hold its own against Microsoft’s and Sony’s powerhouse consoles.

Just prior to Apex Legends’ Switch release, Respawn and Panic Button held an interview with Japanese-language publication Famitsu (via Nintendo Everything) to discuss the game’s resolution and frame rate. The developers revealed that while the Switch is docked, or when it’s outputting to a TV, Apex Legends will run at 720p. While the Switch is in handheld mode (or if the player is using a Nintendo Switch Lite), the resolution is 576p. No matter what mode the player is using, the frame rate is 30fps. This is in line with other major Switch ports, like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. These numbers are a far cry from Apex Legends’ resolution on PC, PlayStation 4 Pro, and Xbox One X, where the game can run at up to 4K resolutions and 144fps. PC players also have access to a significant amount of additional graphical options that allow them to increase the game’s visual quality at the potential cost of performance.

While the Switch’s resolution and frame rate potential may seem embarrassingly inadequate next to that of other consoles and PCs, the truth is that players who want to play Apex Legends at the maximum possible graphical settings will not be using Nintendo’s console to do it. It may not be the most beautiful version of the game, but the Switch has the advantage of portability and ease of use, enabling players to play the game anywhere there’s a stable internet connection. While the game doesn’t support split screen co-op, enterprising players can gather and use their Switches in handheld mode together, providing a fun in-person multiplayer experience.

One of Nintendo’s goals with the Switch was making a console for everyone, hardcore and casual players alike. Nintendo fans no longer have to buy a high-powered PC or a rival console in order to experience everything that gaming has to offer. While the underpowered nature of their consoles means that big, bombastic third-party titles don’t always look as good on the Switch as they do on their PC and other console counterparts, just having major releases on a Nintendo console is already a step forward for Nintendo. Apex Legends fans who are looking to take the game everywhere they go and players looking to experience this battle royale for the first time will be able to do so when the game launches on Nintendo Switch on March 9.
