Apple AirPower Prototype A Reminder Of What iPhone Owners Arent Missing

In 2017, Apple teased a new product coming in the future called AirPower. This wireless charger had features that were ahead of the competition and one that made it particularly attractive to Apple’s fanbase, charging an iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch at the same time.

The tech industry waited eagerly for more news and often jumped at rumors that AirPower was coming soon. To date, the only type of charger Apple manufactures is a corded charger. In 2020, there are still unsubstantiated claims that Apple will finally release AirPower, at a price of over $200. Meanwhile, third parties continue to make real wireless chargers, reaping the benefit of dashed hopes for Apple’s solution.

While AirPower was officially announced, it never came to market. Rumors still circulate that Apple will release AirPower soon. Perhaps this is true, but Apple would have to solve the rumored problem that led to its cancellation in the first place. Allowing charging anywhere on the mat, meant multiple overlapping power coils, causing overheating issues. This is based on a leaked ‘prototype AirPower’ teardown, as seen in this video on bilibili.com, with the teardown starting around the 4:30 mark. The website language is Chinese, but Google Translate offered this “[Disassembly] AirPower & Xiaomi Smart Tracking Wireless Charging” English version of the title.

What Are iPhone Owners Missing, If Anything?

When Apple’s AirPower charger was first mentioned in 2017, wireless charging was already well established, but Apple sought to add its unique spin by ensuring its solution could charge all your Apple products – phone, watch and earbuds – at the same time. Furthermore, the various devices could be placed anywhere on the surface. This is the feature that may have doomed the product to delay after delay and eventually led to it being canceled, considering competing chargers required precise placement to enable full speed charging. However, even the best wireless chargers made in 2020, reach an output of only 15-watts. Quick charge requires 18-watts.

If this overheating problem is solved and Airpower does come to fruition, one would hope Apple would advance it beyond the old expectations, perhaps charging fast enough to compete with plug-in chargers. However, faster than 15-watt wireless charging would require new devices to be compatible. With so much work going into this, one has to wonder if it is really so hard to plug in a charging cable. AirPods and Apple Watch come with wireless chargers already, so it may be just as well that Apple AirPower was delayed, possibly indefinitely.
