Spotify has announced an update to its Apple Watch app that allows users to download tracks to the device and listen to them offline. Here’s how.

Apple Watch users can now download Spotify tracks and listen to them offline. Until now, an internet connection has been needed in order to listen to Spotify using the Apple wearable. The ability to do so without an internet connection has been much requested and Spotify has been beaten to the punch by a number of other services.
A Spotify app for the Apple Watch was first made available towards the end of 2018, but users needed their tethered iPhone nearby to use it. This was a particular bugbear for those who like to listen to music while exercising and didn’t want to carry their phone with them — especially given the Apple Watch’s fitness credentials. A standalone version of the Spotify app released for the Apple Watch was released last year, meaning it was no longer necessary to have a tethered iPhone nearby. A Wi-Fi or mobile connection was still required, though, meaning users exercising outside, rather than in a gym, still typically needed to carry their iPhone.
Fortunately, the untethering is now complete. Spotify has announced that it is rolling out the functionality for its Premium users to download playlists, albums, and podcasts to their Apple Watch. To do so, users need only navigate to and select the music and/or podcasts to which they want to listen offline, then tap the ellipsis menu button icons (three horizontal dots), and tap ‘Download to Apple Watch.’ Users can keep track of download progress in the Downloads section of their Apple Watch and a green arrow will appear next to each piece of content once it has been downloaded. Then, users can begin listening to it without the need for an internet connection or their iPhone nearby. Of course, something to keep in mind is how much space there is available on the Apple Watch in question, with there always being the possibility of users needing to remove content first to make space for downloaded music.
More Spotify Features For The Apple Watch
In its announcement, Spotify also flagged two other features of its app available to Apple Watch users. It noted that all users can now control playback on other devices from their Apple Watch using Spotify Connect. This means it’s possible to play, pause, and skip content that is playing on the likes of wireless speakers, TVs, and game consoles.
In addition, Spotify has reminded users of the capability for controlling Spotify on their Apple Watch using Siri voice commands. Users can just utter the ‘Hey Siri’ activation phrase and then ask for certain songs, artists, albums, playlists, or podcasts to be played ‘on Spotify.’ An example provided by Spotify itself is: “Hey, Siri, play my Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify.” Similarly, volume can be adjusted and content can be paused and skipped, with users just needing to ensure that they use the ‘Hey Siri’ and ‘on Spotify’ elements of the command.
