For anyone that owns an Apple Watch Series 2 or Series 3, knowing about Apple’s screen replacement program is a must. It’s not often that Apple admits mistakes or flaws in its product design, but in some rare instances like this one, the company has no other choice but to do so.
While the Apple Watch Series 2 and 3 may not be the newest Apple Watches on the market in 2021, there’s a decent chance that a lot of people are still rocking these older models. Not everyone needs to upgrade their Apple Watch every single year, especially when many of the year-over-year upgrades are pretty minor. So, for anyone that does still have a Series 2 or 3, here’s the lowdown on Apple’s screen replacement program.
Apple first launched the program in September 2019 in response to some users reporting a design flaw that caused the screen on Apple Watch Series 2 and 3 to crack. Per Apple’s website for the program, “Apple has determined that, under very rare circumstances, a crack may form along the rounded edge of the screen in aluminum models of an Apple Watch Series 2 or Series 3.” As seen in the image below, the crack tends to appear on one corner and then continues around the rest of the display. For anyone with a Series 2 or 3 Apple Watch that’s encountered this issue, it’s possible to get a free screen replacement under the program.
How To Use The Apple Watch Screen Replacement Program
Only the aluminum models of Series 2 and 3 are eligible for the replacement, including Nike+ versions and those with cellular connectivity. Furthermore, Apple has outlined specific dates in which the Apple Watch must have been purchased, going back to September 2016 and up to September 2019 depending on which variant of the Series 2 or 3 that’s in question. Assuming someone has an Apple Watch that meets all of the eligibility requirements, using the program is fairly straightforward.
There are three different ways to get started with the replacement — including finding an Apple Authorized Service Provider, making an appointment at the nearest Apple Retail Store, or contacting Apple Support to receive a mail-in kit. No matter which option is selected, the Apple Watch is set to an Apple Repair Center to determine if it’s eligible for the screen replacement. While the repair should be free of charge in most cases, Apple does note that “In some cases, there may be a cost associated with the repair.”
And that’s about all there is to it. The ideal situation is that Apple Watch Series 2 and 3 owners will never have to use the program, but in the event the screen does crack, this acts as a nice safety blanket. Given that it is 2021, though, it might be time to consider upgrading to something new — cracked display or not.
