Apples (Product) RED iPhone & Watch Bands Explained Why They Matter

Products and accessories from Apple like a red iPhone or a red Apple Watch band help fund AIDS and COVID-19 research. Apple has been working with (RED) for several years by making and selling (Product)RED devices and accessories and giving a portion of the proceeds to help fund AIDS research and awareness in several African countries. Recently, Apple and (RED) have switched gears and are now donating to The Global Fund to help research the COVID-19 virus and especially its effects on those with HIV and AIDS.

(RED) was founded in 2006 by Bobby Shriver, the founder of the ONE Campaign, and U2 lead singer Bono. The two created the foundation in the hope of partnering with companies to create products to raise money and awareness to help end HIV/AIDS. The foundation currently partners with nine different companies, including Durex, Starbucks, and Apple. According to the foundation, 100-percent of a donation is used to help research treatment for HIV/AIDS, as well as help educate people on prevention methods, and help prevent mother-to-child transmission in several African countries.

Apple was one of the first companies that RED partnered with and it all started with exclusive (Product)Red iPods. Apple made a variety of red iPods from iPod Nanos to iPod Shuffles, and for a while (Product)RED devices were exclusive to Apple’s iPod line. Years later the company expanded its red products to include accessories, such as (Product)RED phone and iPad cases. It wasn’t until the iPhone 8 that Apple would begin to make other (Product)RED devices outside of its iPod line. Currently, consumers can buy a (Product)RED iPhone 11, XR, or SE. Consumers can also still buy a plethora of red Apple accessories along with new (product)RED Apple Watch bands.

How Buying (Product)Red Helps

Consumers who buy a (Product)RED iPhone or watch band are doing a lot more than just buying themselves a unique Apple product. They’re supporting The Global Fund for AIDS by indirectly donating to them. When buying a (Product)RED Apple device, whether its an iPhone, Apple Watch band, or even a phone case, Apple will donate a portion of those proceeds to The Global Fund. While Apple has not stated exactly how much of the proceeds from each device goes to The Global Fund, Apple explains it has donated over $220,000,000 to the organization. With the help of (RED), that money fight back against AIDS through supplying funds for treatments, counseling, and AIDS prevention courses, in a number of countries. For example, these programs have been able to assist in Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Rwanda, South Africa, eSwatini, Tanzania, and Zambia.

By purchasing red products from Apple, consumers are also supporting the fight against the COVID-19 virus. Earlier this year Apple announced that it was partnering with (RED) to help combat the COVID-19 and stated that “100% of eligible proceeds” from products go to the Global Fund’s COVID‑19 Response. Apple and (RED)’s goal in doing this is to try and help fund research and treatment for COVID-19, due to its immense threat to those struggling with HIV/AIDS.
