Aquaman 2 Star Says Black Manta Has More Personality in Sequel

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will show more of Black Manta’s personality, says star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Black Manta has long been one of Aquaman’s primary antagonists since he was first introduced in Aquaman #35 in 1967. The character was included as the secondary villain in the 2018 Aquaman film, with the after-credit moment teasing that Black Manta would become more of a threat to Arthur Curry.

Abdul-Mateen II has been busy in the past few years. Since his role in Aquaman, the actor played the role of Cal Abar on HBO’s Watchmen. He landed film roles in Jordan Peele’s Us, Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Nia DaCosta’s Candyman. The actor is next set to appear as a new younger Morpheus in The Matrix Resurrections. In 2022, he will star in Michael Bay’s Ambulance, which just recently landed an April release date, and in December of that same year, he will reprise his role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in a much larger role with a new Black Manta suit.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, Abdul-Mateen II revealed Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will show more of Black Manta’s personality. He said that more of Black Manta’s leadership skills will be shown, as they were slightly teased at the beginning of the first film. The actor hinted that Black Manta will have a much larger role in the sequel, likely implying he will be the film’s primary antagonist. Read what he said below:

“I think in the next Aquaman, I really wanted to put more personality into the character for us to sort of get to know him in some more private moments. Wanted to see [Black Manta] struggle with some things, then to see a bit more of his personality and character. Also, to see what it looks like for him to be in charge of something. So we get to see a little bit more of his leadership style, a little bit more of his personality in this one. And he’s back for more, no doubt, in a big way.”

The first Aquaman movie featured a lot of story elements from the comics, as between showing Aquaman becoming king of Atlantis and the conflict with his half-brother Orm, the film also fit in an origin story for Black Manta. While many praised Manta’s design, some felt the character was underdeveloped and should have been saved for another film. Warner Bros. originally planned for a Black Manta solo film after Aquaman, but the project was eventually scrapped, and elements of it likely have been incorporated into Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

What type of villain Black Manta will be remains to be seen. He could be an honorable but brutal warrior or a more sadistic vengeful villain, as in the comics, Black Manta is responsible for the murder of Aquaman’s son. The comics also establish that Black Manta is the father of Jackson Hyde, a.k.a. Kaldur’ahm, who becomes Aquaman’s sidekick, Aqualad. Manta being a father could parallel his own relationship with his father that was established in the first film, and either compare or contrast the type of man he is to his son. While there currently is no indication of Aqualad being in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the introduction of the character into the DCEU would grow the roster of heroes and expand the world out more.
