Aquaman Jason Momoa Says Aquamans Diversity is Relatable

Aquaman star Jason Momoa talked in a new interview about how he can relate to the superhero’s unique diversity. As a half-Hawaiian, half-German/Irish/Native American man growing up in Iowa, Momoa certainly felt like a fish out of water himself at times. In addition, he studied marine biology and wildlife biology in college – so he’s practically born for this role. And his background combined with his magnetic personality make him one of the most anticipated star turns of 2018 when Aquaman finally hits theaters.

Fans already got a glimpse of the blend of energy and humor that Momoa brings to his performance as Arthur Curry in his appearance in Justice League. But as one might expect from an ensemble film, Curry’s particular backstory and themes didn’t make the cut in Zack Snyder’s latest. Fans can expect a much deeper dive into Arthur Curry’s life when Aquaman chronicles his transformation into the titular hero. In light of that, fans can also bank on a more emotionally invested performance from Momoa as he taps into his own personal history.

The former Game of Thrones star touched upon Aquaman’s celebration of diversity in a new interview with Australia’s Daily Telegraph (via the Daily Mail). Momoa remarked that he loves how Aquaman is “half-and-half” – meaning half-man, half-fish – alluding to his own uncommon ancestral mix. He also hopes for the character’s journey to be an inspiration to people who felt like they didn’t fit in where they grew up:

“I can really relate, being born in Hawaii and raised in Iowa … [and him] coming from this Atlantis-Hawaii and not really feeling accepted in either place.”

Momoa also commented briefly on Aquaman being an inspiration for children from “broken homes” and the distinct challenges kids face under those circumstances. The actor feels that the movie will resonate with viewers from that particular kind of background. Aquaman is expected to be a complete origin story for Arthur Curry and Atlantis, especially now that the Justice League scenes that covered the hero’s mythology ended up on the cutting room floor in reshoots.

As an actor who experienced similar emotional challenges to Arthur Curry growing up, Momoa as Aquaman has a major opportunity to deliver one of the more heartfelt portrayals of a DC superhero on the big screen. And he could also eliminate a negative stigma surrounding the character. Obviously, director James Wan is invested in the Aquaman mythology with scenes featuring Temuera Morrison as Arthur’s father. The movie can feature all the action and special effects it wants, but a deep, rich exploration of themes of family and diversity is what could bring it to another level.

There’s a lot riding on what Wan and Momoa can deliver with Aquaman. Justice League divided fans and underwhelmed critics, and ultimately fell short at the box office as well. Now, Aquaman is looked at to be DC’s rebound. The movie is just now starting to release some compelling-looking new images, and a dynamic team like Momoa and Wan may be exactly what the franchise needs.
