Aquaman’s greatest enemy, Black Manta, will step into the spotlight in a new six-issue mini-series by writer Chuck Brown and artist Valentine De Landro. The mini-series, debuting in print and digital this September, is part of a larger initiative by DC commemorating Aquaman’s 80th anniversary.

Every hero has one villain in their rogue’s gallery that stands head and shoulders above the rest, and for Aquaman, that is undoubtedly Black Manta. First appearing in 1967’s Aquaman #35 and created by Bob Haney and Nick Cardy, Black Manta is a high-tech pirate with a vendetta against Aquaman, one that led him to eventually kill Aquaman’s infant son. Their feud now personal, Black Manta and Aquaman have fought numerous times over the years. Black Manta has a son, Jackson Hyde, who is the current Aqualad, and will be featured in a title of his own later this year as well. The villain has proven popular with fans and made the jump into live-action with 2018’s Aquaman film, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen. Now, as part of Aquaman’s 80th-anniversary celebration, Black Manta gets his first-ever solo series.

Today, writer Chuck Brown announced the title on his Twitter feed, along with De Landro’s involvement. Although no exact release date was given, Brown said the book will debut in September, the same month Black Manta’s son receives his first title. Neither Brown or DC have released plot details either.

Aquaman is celebrating his 80th anniversary this year, and DC is celebrating it by shining the spotlight on some of his villains and supporting characters. Black Manta has been laying low in the comics as of late, so fans can expect him to return in a grand fashion. Aquaman himself has been keeping a low profile; his solo title recently concluded, and he became a father again—will he appear in this new miniseries, ready to foil Black Manta’s plans? Will he finally get revenge on the villain for killing his son? As mentioned earlier, Black Manta’s son Jackson will be starring in a book published concurrently—will there be a crossover between the two? And what other plans are in place for Aquaman’s 80th birthday?

Since 1967, Black Manta has been a continual thorn in the side of Aquaman, committing some truly heinous acts against him and the other heroes of the DC Universe. Now Black Manta gets his first series, giving fans an even better look at Aquaman’s greatest foe.
