WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the second act of Arcane, now streaming on Netflix
Arcane focuses on the backstories of many of the biggest characters from League of Legends. The characters are largely younger than their in-game counterparts, and the show has delved into the events that transformed them into their more iconic forms. But this means that certain important relationships have already been teased — both positive and negative ones.
The second act of Arcane explores two vital friendships — with the eventual League of Legends lore suggesting one of them will become definite partners, while the other will eventually be pitted against one another.
Arcane’s second batch of episodes takes place years after the events of the previous three episodes — focusing on a Piltover and Undercity that have radically changed since the death of Vander. Now largely under the control of Silco and his forces, the Undercity has become an increasingly dangerous place, especially with Jinx running around. Vi gets the chance to return though, when Caityln’s investigation requires her presence. Finally released from prison, Vi and Caitlyn are initially at odds — but slowly begin to develop a bond across the three episodes. There’s even some indication and visual cues that hint it could become romantic in nature, both of which gel with the eventual path of the pairing from the original lore of the game world.
In the original League of Legends — which seems to take place years after the events of Arcane, when the relatively young central cast has reached full maturity — Vi and Caitlyn are frequent partners, with a buff titled “Piltover’s Finest” even appearing if they work together on the same team in-game. The two have a history of protecting Piltover together by that point, with the pair’s in-game characters capable of sharing friendly (and even sometimes flirty) comments. In the lore, Caitlyn eventually becomes Sheriff of Piltover (a position currently held by Silco’s associate Grayson) with Vi by her side, fighting crime. While Arcane is largely focused on Vi and Jinx, it’s exciting to see the beginning of one of League of Legends’ most heroic relationships take up a major part of Arcane.
More tragic is the eventual fate of Jayce and Viktor. Both brilliant scientists, the two meet in the first act of Arcane — working together before Jayce is fully expelled from the Academy to try and crack Hex-Tech. Finally successful in the final moments of the show’s third episode “The Base Violence Necessary For Change,” the pair have become increasingly successful in the years that pass between first and second sets of episodes — working together on new advancements for Hex-Tech. However, there’s already been some divide in how they wish to utilize the technology — with Jayce conflicted over the pair using the technology too dangerously before they have full control over it, and Viktor’s failing health driving him to become more reckless — even turning to Singed for help.
Already, Arcane has made some tweaks to Viktor’s story with Jayce. In the official Riot Games bio for Viktor, he’s described as a frequent lab partner of Jayce who he respected — but never became genuine friends with. Meanwhile, Jayce’s bio painted them as former friends who fell apart due to a difference in opinion about Viktor’s work. While that made their eventual conflict against one another slightly less personal, it bodes poorly for the Arcane incarnations of the characters. They’ve become established as far closer friends, with Jayce describing Viktor as his brother and Viktor clearly taking Jayce into high regard. But his own ascending fame and rising power in Piltover is causing a separation between Jayce and Viktor, which could eventually fester into the kind of animosity they share in-game.
To see how these relationships develop, Arcane is available to stream on Netflix.
