Archie Comics Celebrates 80th Anniversary With One Shot

To commemorate their 80th anniversary, Archie Comics will be releasing a series of special one-shots done in the classic Archie Comics style, and the first, Everything’s Archie, arrives in shops this June. The special will bring together classic Archie artist Dan Parent with writer Fred Van Lente, making his Archie Comics debut.

Archie, Veronica, Jughead, Betty, and the rest of the Riverdale gang have proven to be one of comics’ most versatile franchises, weathering shifting marketing trends and finding a niche in a mostly super-hero driven industry. The company began modernizing in the early 2000s, making news by introducing the company’s first openly gay character: Kevin Keller; while also made waves by introducing real-world topics, such as the Occupy Movement into Riverdale. Then, in 2012, the company introduced a new line that truly brought Archie and his pals into the 21st century, embracing more modern styles of art and story, and bringing creators such as Mark Waid and Chip Zdarsky into the fold. This reinvention was met with critical acclaim and great sales. The Archie franchise is one that is open to reinterpretation and can stay relevant with the times.

In a press release from Archie Comics, writer Fred Van Lente praised this adaptability, calling it the sign of a “great franchise,” and that he had wanted to work on an Archie title for a long time. Lente went on to say that updating Archie and the gang into the era of social media and other real-life situations was “pretty effortless.” Artist Dan Parent, a 35-year veteran of the company, also expressed excitement over the book and working with Lente as well as his other classic Archie collaborators, including Bob Smith and Glenn Whitmore.

The release stresses the timelessness of Archie and his adventures and bringing together a veteran Archie artist with a new-to-the-franchise writer shows this. The release also provides preview pages showcasing Parent’s artwork and it indeed mixes a classic Archie Comics-style with modern sensibilities, such as more diverse crowds and contemporary fashion styles.

Over the past 80 years, Archie Comics has persevered through various fads and trends in the comics industry, and at the same time has shown it is open to new ideas and new voices. Everything’s Archie #1, and the specials that will follow will be the perfect showcase for what makes Archie Comics great. Everything’s Archie #1 is written by Fred Van Lente, with art by Dan Parent, Bob Smith, and Glenn Whitmore and will be available in stores and on all digital comics outlets on June 9, 2021.
