Are AirTags Rechargeable Apples Item Tracker Battery Explained

Apple’s new AirTag accessory is shaping up to be one of the most powerful Bluetooth trackers to date, and surprisingly, the small device can last an extremely long time without needing to be charged up. When the battery does eventually run out, Apple has users covered with a quick and painless replacement process.

While Bluetooth trackers aren’t anything new, AirTag’s deep integration with other Apple devices should make it stand out as one of the best on the market. It can be set up in seconds, comes with robust privacy controls, and utilizes UWB technology for highly accurate tracking — getting right down to the distance and direction between an AirTag and its connected iPhone. AirTag also taps into Apple’s Find My Network. If an AirTag loses the Bluetooth connection between it and its connected iPhone/iPad, other nearby Apple devices can anonymously see its location and let the owner know exactly where it is — making it virtually impossible to lose the thing completely.

All of that technology is mighty impressive for something as small as the AirTag, and making it even better is how Apple handled the battery situation. The included battery that comes with AirTag can last over a year with regular use, and when it dies, there’s no way to charge it. That might seem like a terrible design at first, but the good news is that Apple has made it extremely easy for AirTag owners to swap in a new battery when the time comes.

The Battery Can Be Replaced In Just A Few Seconds

AirTag is powered by a CR2032 coin cell battery, which is the same kind often found in watches, remote controls, and other devices. CR2032 batteries are regularly available at most stores and often quite affordable, typically ranging from $2 for a single battery or $10 for a six-pack.

To access the AirTag’s battery, press down on the metal backside with two fingers (one on either side of the Apple logo) and turn it counter-clockwise. The metal back should then pop off, revealing the CR20232 battery directly beneath it. Remove the old battery, add the new one, and then put the metal plate back in. Rotate it clockwise to lock it into place, and that’s all there is to it.

While Apple isn’t the first company to have a replaceable battery design for a Bluetooth tracker, its replacement process is among the easiest out there. Just press down, turn, and the battery is right there. AirTag will also send an alert through the connected iPhone when its battery starts getting low, giving users plenty of time to find a replacement and get it swapped out.
