Are Game Of Thrones Showrunners Involved In House Of The Dragon

Are Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss involved with prequel show House of the Dragon? Benioff and Weiss brought the HBO show to life, adapting George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels for the small screen. But the duo also oversaw Game of Thrones’ divisive ending, with most of the ire from fans and critics alike aimed at them in particular. That, however, wasn’t the true end of Game of Thrones.

HBO is pressing ahead with more stories from Westeros, and has several Game of Thrones spinoffs in development. Chief amongst them is House of the Dragon, a prequel focused on House Targaryen in its prime. It’s a looser adaptation this time around – Martin has covered the period in his Targaryen history book, Fire & Blood, but it’s not quite the same as a long series of novels – which should make for an interesting page-to-screen process. Given the lack of source material is where many believe Benioff & Weiss started to go wrong, will the prequel repeat those mistakes?

Perhaps not. As it stands, Game of Thrones showrunners Benioff and Weiss are not involved in House of the Dragon. Further, they’re not expected to work on any Game of Thrones spinoffs. It is possible that, as the creators of Game of Thrones, they will receive executive producer credits when the show debuts, but they aren’t going to have any creative input on the series. That instead falls to a trio of individuals, two of whom do have history with Game Of Thrones.

House of the Dragon has been co-created by Martin himself, alongside Ryan Condal (Colony). Condal will also serve as co-showrunner, working with Miguel Sapochnik, who directed several episodes of Game of Thrones, including “Hardhome,” “Battle of the Bastards,” and “The Long Night.” The idea did even have its genesis with another Game of Thrones alum, as it was originally developed by Martin and Bryan Cogman, longtime writer and producer whose screenplay credits include “Kissed By Fire” and “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.”

Even before the reception to Game of Thrones season 8, Benioff and Weiss had distanced themselves from making any spin-offs as far back as 2016, saying: “It’s a great world that George created. It’s a very rich world. I’m sure there will be other series set in Westeros. But for us, this is it.” The showrunners had originally planned to put their focus on Star Wars, with the pair hired to oversee a trilogy of movies of Lucasfilm. However, that deal was ended in 2019, after Benioff and Weiss signed a huge contract with Netflix for a raft of projects. That’s currently their focus right now, with upcoming shows including The Three-Body Problem, The Chair, and Metal Lords. It’s hard to imagine they would make a return to Westeros anytime soon, but House of the Dragon is clearly in good hands.
