Are Pokémon Diamond & Pearl Remakes Coming In 2021

Dedicated Pokémon players are now familiar with the pattern Nintendo and Game Freak use for their releases. In between each major generation, there’s usually a remake of a past game, generally going in order from the last remake. The mega evolved popularity of Pokémon GO put a slight halt to these plans, as Pokémon Yellow got a GO-friendly reboot on Switch in place of a return to Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Now that Pokémon Sword and Shield’s DLC rollout has finished, attention shifts to the next set of side games, with the Generation 4 remakes being on the top of many player’s wishlists. The question remains: Will players be able to revisit these Nintendo DS classics before the end of 2021?

The world of Pokémon and its many expansions is seemingly never-ending, and there are plenty of current ways for fans of the franchise to catch ’em all. In addition to the Nintendo Switch releases, many players are still enjoying Pokémon GO from the comfort of their own home thanks to a robust schedule of special events. There are also several other mobile games based on the franchise, like Pokémon Café Mix and Pokémon Masters EX. However, for those who want to stay on traditional game platforms, The Pokémon Company recently had some very good news.

During a special Pokémon Direct in late February, Game Freak showed off two new Nintendo Switch Pokémon experiences that are currently in the works. One will feature a fundamental shift in the gameplay seen in all the mainline Pokémon titles to date. Known as Pokémon Legends: Arceus, this game will send players into the past of the Pokémon universe and depict the early days of catching Pokémon. Players will battle and throw out Pokéballs in real-time, a change that has many comparing the game to Nintendo’s own The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While it’s an exciting change of pace, the developers also have a more traditional remake in store for fans.

Will Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Release in 2021?

A full remake of the Sinnoh games was revealed alongside Arceus, and they’re currently scheduled for release in late 2021. Titled Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Pokémon Shining Pearl, these games feature a chibi art style ripped straight off the Nintendo DS. This has caused some controversy among fans. While some people think it evokes the originals and compliments the more outgoing Pokémon Legends: Arceus, others have found it to be a step backwards in terms of graphics. Either way, players can expect a full redo of Pokémon’s first dual-screen adventure by the end of this year.

With two huge Nintendo Switch releases on the horizon, Pokémon fans have plenty to look forward to. There is some question as to whether Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl can recapture the unique aspects of the Sinnoh region and the Nintendo DS hardware, but players will have to see more gameplay before they decide for themselves. Since these remakes are coming out of a studio outside of Game Freak, perhaps there will be more room for fine-tuning and experimentation. The adventures must remain faithful to the classic games, but recent Pokémon announcements have shown that there’s always room for improvement in an old formula.
