Army Of The Dead Bautistas Scott Ward Always Knew He Would Die

Army of the Dead suggests that Dave Bautista’s character Scott Ward always knew he was going to die. Zack Snyder’s new zombie heist movie follows a rag-tag group of mercenaries, led by Scott and recruited to retrieve $200 million from a Las Vegas casino. The only catch is that the city is lorded over by the zombie king, Zeus, and his undead minions, and the team must complete the mission before a nuclear bomb is dropped on the city. While Scott is largely motivated by his past and making amends with his daughter, it is implied he understands the mission will end with his death.

Out of all the characters in Army of the Dead, Scott Ward’s development takes precedence. Early on, a flashback shows the devastating choice Scott must make to save his daughter Kate (Ella Purnell). The act of killing his wife, who looks to be newly turned, changes Scott’s life dramatically, including damaging his relationship with Kate. This experience lends to the fact that he goes into the present heist with the notion that he won’t make it out alive.

In addition to the trauma of his wife’s death at his hands, Scott is also dealing with the emotional loss of Kate. After his wife’s death, Scott pulls away from his daughter in his grief, offering her no comfort or help in navigating life without her mother. As a result, she grows to resent him. After he takes the job to infiltrate Las Vegas, he enlists her help to drive them closer to the city and promises her millions if she accepts. While it’s a gesture of reconciliation, this could also ensure that the fortune will go to his next of kin should he die. Scott seems to be preparing for the likelihood of his demise already. This mission does not promise anyone’s survival, especially after the Zombie Queen is beheaded and Kate ruins the Army of the Dead heist to track down her missing friend.

During the course of the movie, Scott and Kate tentatively bond over what he’ll do with his earnings once they unlock the vault. He wants to open a food truck, but the cuisine keeps changing. He urges Kate to use her funds to transport children out of the quarantine zone. And when Kate leaves to go find her friend, Scott risks his life to get her on the chopper out of Las Vegas, going head to head with Zeus to save her.

In the ending of Army of the Dead, Scott succumbs to his wounds from the helicopter crash and Zeus’s bite but dies knowing he has reconciled with Kate. Money doesn’t even matter anymore, so long as he knows she’s going to be all right. He dies peacefully with that knowledge, though his story officially ends when Kate must make the same awful choice Scott had to make earlier by preventing his full turn into a zombie.
