Army of Thieves: How Each Character Will Fare In The Zombie Apocalypse

The zombie apocalypse may be in the background of Army of Thieves, but it is coming. How will each character fare when it does?

Army of Thieves is the second installment in the Army of the Dead franchise, acting as a prequel centered around the German locksmith that opened the safe in the original film, Ludwig Deiter (or, as he is known in the film, Sebastian Schlencht-Wöhnert). The prequel takes place just as the zombie apocalypse is breaking out, though the zombie menace plays little role in the film itself.

Audiences know from the ending of the first film, however, that the zombies are destined to spread beyond the walls surrounding Las Vegas. When the zombie apocalypse inevitably reaches the characters from Army of the Dead, one has to wonder how each will fare in the rotting world.

7 Beatrix

Beatrix is an Interpol agent that acts as the right hand to Delacroix, one of Army of Thieves’ most unlikable characters, and clearly the more stable of the two. She is often the one who pulls her boss away from crossing the line, often just barely. It is her cool-headedness that actually allows for Delacroix to capture the band of thieves in the end, though he is certainly the one who will get all the credit.

When faced with an onslaught of zombies, one has to imagine that Beatrix will hold her own quite nicely. She is skilled and capable, but more importantly, level-headed and rational. At several points in the film, she displays an intellect that, had she been the one in charge, would have brought Sebastian’s heisting team down right away. Clearly, she would bring much to the table in a bid to survive the endless hordes of zombies.

6 Delacroix

Delacroix is the head Interpol agent tasked with tracking down and arresting the titular heist team. However, he becomes increasingly obsessed with finding them, especially Brad Cage, with whom he had an embarrassing encounter prior to the film’s events. His obsession drives him near the brink of insanity until he eventually finally does catch the crooks.

This man is controlling, cocky, and often unstable. Therefore, there are really only two likely avenues for Delacroix come the end of the world: either he will die quite quickly, or become a tyrannical leader in the style of a villain on The Walking Dead. Either way, there is no good ending for this man in a dystopia. More likely, however, is the former, judging from the general lack of respect that is found among his subordinates in the pre-apocalyptic world.

5 Rolph

Rolph is the getaway driver and one of the best characters in Army of Thieves who makes friends with Sebastian early on in the film, despite siding with Cage later on. He puts on a tough exterior but proves to be the softie of the group, rarely standing up for himself and generally going with the flow of things, even if he does make idle protests otherwise.

While he is physically somewhat intimidating and would be able to use his impressive driving skills to escape hordes of zombies, once Rolph ended up on foot, he wouldn’t be much longer for the world. He is not depicted as having many fighting skills, if any at all, and would probably be one of the first in the group to fall. And, given his love of warm meats, he would quickly become zombie bait.

4 Korina

Korina is the tough but loving computer whiz in the heist team, whose sarcastic remarks are one of the highlights of the film. Though she often comes off as uncaring, she has a warm heart underneath the exterior, eventually choosing Sebastian’s friendship over Brad Cage’s.

Korina has several things going for her in a zombie apocalypse. She is determined, tough, and unyielding, all attributes that are desirable in the end of the world. However, she does lack many of the fighting skills that many of her other teammates possess. Not to mention, her main skill set would be rendered useless in a world that will eventually lose its use of technology. In order to survive, Korina would have to be sure to stick with a group of capable fighters.

3 Brad Cage

Brad Cage, originally known as Alexis Broschini, is an amalgamation of the greatest ’90s heroes that he grew up watching. However, his self-absorbed and possessive personality turns him into more of a villain than he ever pictured himself becoming. After being abandoned by half his team when he sacrificed Sebastian to escape Interpol, he quickly descends into instability, losing any heroism he may have had left.

Cage would probably have little problem surviving in the apocalypse. While he is far from Army of Thieves’ smartest characters, he is strong and quite capable, even at one point taking a bullet to the shoulder with little fuss about it. However, his means of survival would likely prove to be far less honorable than others. Brad’s selfishness would almost certainly result in his sacrificing others in order to survive himself, quickly turning him into a post-apocalyptic villain.

2 Gwendoline

Gwendoline is the heart of the group and the first one to make contact with Sebastian. Her unhappy past and unhealthy coping mechanisms make her the woman that we see in the film. Unlike some of the other team members, Gwendoline is in the heist for the thrill, and bonds with Sebastian over the tortured beauty of their quarry.

Gwendoline is a fierce fighter, taking on multiple adversaries single-handedly at several points in the film. She also possesses an impressive level of bravery in Army of Thieves, willing to sacrifice her own freedom so that Sebastian can escape at the end of the film. She has all the attributes necessary to survive a long time after the world crumbles around her.

1 Sebastian

Sebastian is the main character of the film, a German locksmith with a fascination for safecracking. His love of the history and culture surrounding his quarry drives him to throw in his lot with Gwendoline and the others, setting him off on the kind adventure that he had never dreamed of ever embarking upon.

Unlike the rest of the group, Sebastian has the distinction of being the only character in the film that the audience has actually witnessed in the heat of the zombie apocalypse. He fares about as well as one might have expected, being quite fearful of the zombies, but pushing through his fear nonetheless, as he always does. In the end, his heroic sacrifice to save Vanderohe also falls right in character for him, cementing him as the selfless and ultimately courageous hero that viewers always knew he was.
