Army Of Thieves Trailer Breakdown 8 Story & Shared Universe Reveals

Army of Thieves, the prequel to Zack Snyder’s epic zombie heist epic, Army of the Dead revealed a number of key plot elements in its newest trailer, including some major ties to Army of the Dead that may even have larger implications for Snyder’s shared universe on Netflix. Army of Thieves sees Matthias Schweighöfer take the reins as director (while Snyder has credits for story and producer), while the movie focuses on the backstory of Schweighöfer’s Army of the Dead character, German safe-cracker, Ludwig Dieter.

Army of the Dead was a mostly serious, violent, R-rated heist romp through a zombie-infested Las Vegas with a number of major teases of even crazier elements, like aliens and potential time-loops, but Army of Thieves takes a big tonal diversion, focusing on the more comedic Dieter, with a more traditional Italian Job style heist film. Set in Europe without zombies, it’s already going to stand out as unique to Army of the Dead, all while maintaining key characters and events from that universe.

There’s still a number of big mysteries hiding in the newest trailer, but it’s quick to establish its big connections to Snyder’s Army of the Dead, including some surprise reveals that may already recontextualize the way people see elements of the original movie. We may already have a good idea of how everything turns out in the end, it’s clear there’s still a number of twists and turns, and maybe even major Army of the Dead universe surprises along the way.

8. Dieter is a Master Safe Cracker

We already knew Dieter is good at what he does from Army of the Dead, and the explanation there was because the Götterdämmerung was a part of a set of safes he had an unexplained obsession with, but what got him into this world in the first place? Army of Thieves fills in that backstory. The trailer opens with some kind of underground safe cracking contest, where the contestants have to race against the clock and each other to crack their safe first. And as with any secret underground ring of this nature in movies, there are always other eyes lurking.

Gwendoline (Nathalie Emmanuel) is looking to recruit the last member of her team to crack these mythical safes, and Dieter’s performance in the contest appears to be what gets him in. It’s clear the safes themselves are far more complicated than any normal security system, as we saw in Army of the Dead, so they can’t settle for anything less than the best.

7. Army of Thieves Zombie Connection

Army Of Thieves Trailer Breakdown 8 Story & Shared Universe Reveals

Just because Army of the Dead is a zombie heist movie doesn’t mean Army of Thieves will also center around the zombie apocalypse. As established in Army of the Dead, the zombie outbreak was localized mostly to Las Vegas, so a movie about a series of heists in Europe isn’t going to have to worry about the same undead threat, but we do see plenty of zombies in this trailer to establish its connection to Army of the Dead.

In fact, the zombie outbreak in Vegas may be more central to the plot of Army of Thieves than the movie’s setting would suggest. Gwendoline tells Dieter the world being “distracted” by the Vegas zombie outbreak (which Dieter is shown watching on TV), making now the right time for the heist. Ironically, it’s very similar to the reason given for the heist in Army of the Dead, just sans the ticking clock of an impending nuclear missile.

6. Meet the Army of Thieves’ Heist Team

Army Of Thieves Trailer Breakdown 8 Story & Shared Universe Reveals

At the core of every heist movie is the team of experts, an element also present in Army of the Dead, although Army of Thieves appears to be leaning into the traditional heist genre trope a little stronger. Army of the Dead’s team had a clearly defined pilot and safecracker, but many of the other members were simply generalist zombie killers. Army of Thieves’ crew includes Korina (Ruby O. Fee), the “master hacker”; Rolph (Guz Khan), the “getaway driver”; and Brad Cage (Stuart Martin) as the team’s “real-life action hero.” Of course, the team is rounded out by mastermind Gwendoline and the safe-cracker, Dieter.

Ironically, both movies make a bit of a joke about the nature of these squads. In Army of the Dead, Marianne Peters (Tig Notaro) tells Scott Ward (Dave Bautista) “obviously the German is the most important person ’cause he can open the safe, but barring that, it’s got to be me, right? Because without me, you can’t fly the chopper out of there. So that would make me second most important.” In the Army of Thieves trailer, Dieter calls it out with an even more on-the-nose comment, “so, is it like in a movie film, where each one of us has a different skill set, and it’s only working together that we can pull off that which needs the pulling off?” to which Gwendoline simply says “yes, it’s exactly like that.”

5. One of Army of the Dead’s Villains Makes a Return

While the zombies were the most immediate threat in Army of the Dead, Zeus and the other Alpha zombies were painted in a bit more sympathetic light, whereas the true villain was Bly Tanaka (Hiroyuki Sanada). Bly was the shadowy billionaire mastermind who sent the team to their deaths (and apparently other teams before them) and was trying to weaponize the Alpha zombies for profit, which feels far more sinister than Zeus and the Alphas simply trying to survive and usually only attacking in defense or when provoked.

In fact, the reveal that Tanaka is the one that owns all the safes in Army of Thieves as well totally changes the context of Army of the Dead. The trailer confirms Dieter already knows about Bly, and Dieter’s involvement in these heists means Bly is likely at least aware of Dieter as well, making Dieter’s presence in Vegas seem all the more convenient when he’s picked to join the team in Army of the Dead. Considering the number of unanswered questions about crazy things like robot zombies, aliens, time loops, and Vanderohe’s (Omari Hardwick) mysterious survival and transformation makes the mythical nature of the safes and the fact that Tanaka wanted the one in Vegas opened – even though it was supposedly only a shell game for Martin (Garett Dillahunt) to collect the Alpha Queen zombie’s head – even more curious.

4. The 3 Safes May Have Huge Army of the Dead Shared Universe Significance

Army Of Thieves Trailer Breakdown 8 Story & Shared Universe Reveals

The safe under the Bly Casino in Las Vegas in Army of the Dead was named “Götterdämmerung” after the fourth and final chapter in Richard Wagner’s Ring cycle opera telling a loosely inspired version of the death of the gods in the Norse Ragnarok. Naturally, the three safes in Army of Thieves are named after the other three chapters in Wagner’s epic, the Reingold, the Valkyrie, and the Siegfried.

According to Dieter in Army of the Dead, the safes were designed by a man named Hans Wagner, who was inspired by his namesake, Richard Wagner. On one level, there may be nothing more to the safes than that, however, their epic inspiration and mythic-looking design is even more interesting in a universe where zombies may have an ancient alien origin. Dieter’s near-religious reverence for the safes in Army of the Dead could just be an element of his eccentric personality, but he tells Scott Ward and Maria Cruz (Ana de la Reguera) the Götterdämmerung is “a doorway to another realm, my friends,” and later tells Vanderohe “if I can open it, will be either destruction or renewal. Death, or rebirth.” Many of these mythical ideas were teased in Army of the Dead, and while the movie has a lot of Easter eggs referencing alien involvement and other mystical concepts, it’s still not clear if this is just thematic use of metaphor or a literal tie to the mythical death of the gods in Wagner’s Ring cycle.

3. Army of Thieves Has a Much More Global Scale

Army Of Thieves Trailer Breakdown 8 Story & Shared Universe Reveals

Army of the Dead may have seen some big-scale action with massive zombie hordes and nuclear explosions, but the whole movie was contained to events in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Army of Thieves is taking things a bit more global. The movie was shot in Prague, Czech Republic, Hallstatt, Austria, and Obersalzberg, Germany, but it’s already clear from the trailer some of those locations are meant to represent other European cities as well, with the map of the safes’ locations showing one in Paris, one in Prague, and one in Obersalzberg; however, most of the trailer’s action seems to be centered in Prague and the other shooting locations.

The first establishing shot is of Vyšehrad Railway Bridge over the Vltava river in Prague, featuring iconic Prague landmarks like the St. Vitus Cathedral. Other shots of car chases also show prominent Prague landmarks and street signs, and the main bank heist shown is shot in the Czech Savings Bank Expat Center Building, which seems to be representing the interior of another Prague building, the Galerie Rudolfinum (which itself is minorly modified with CGI as the fictional “NPIB” building). The water shots, including Dieter driving a boat all appear to be in Hallstatt, also featuring the landmark Hallstatt Lutheran Church, and the mountain truck chase is from Obersalzberg, Germany. Paris is shown in an establishing shot, but it’s not clear how much of the movie takes place there. Regardless, it’s clear this heist crew makes their way around Europe, including some gorgeous architecture and natural location scenery.

2. Dieter is An Unconventional Action Hero

Army Of Thieves Trailer Breakdown 8 Story & Shared Universe Reveals

While Army of the Dead was full of hardcore, seasoned zombie killers, Dieter was a fish out of water, claiming he’s never used a gun and being generally uncomfortable with violence, which may not be too odd as a secondary character, but Army of Thieves puts him front and center as the main character, and as a prequel, has to respect his inexperience. It’s always possible he’s lying about his experience, as we already know he doesn’t reveal his full level of familiarity with these particular safes or his existing connection to Bly Tanaka, but neither the initial Army of Thieves teaser nor the new full trailer ever show Dieter handling a gun himself, although he’s surrounded by people far more comfortable with action.

Just because he’s not involved in the violent part of the heist doesn’t mean he stays away from the action, though, there’s plenty of examples of him in dangerous situations. Most movies focus on the traditional action hero, such as Stuart Martin’s Brad Cage, so it’s interesting to maintain the focus on Dieter. The fact that he’s not directly involved in any of the big shootouts in the trailer could also make sense if those are all staged diversions to distract security and other authorities while Dieter gets to work on cracking the safes.

1. Army of Thieves is Way More Comedic Than Army of the Dead

During the Army of Thieves panel during Netflix’s “Tudum” event, the movie’s producers, Zack Snyder, his wife Debbie Snyder, and Wesley Coller discussed their desire to show a wide variety of genres and tones set within this same universe as Army of the Dead. While Army of Thieves director Matthias Schweighöfer maintains the kind of stylistic flair you’d expect from a Snyder-produced movie, the trailer leans far more into the comedy aspect, which is already very suited to his character without being inconsistent with his portrayal in Army of the Dead, which was a much more tonally serious movie that happened to include a few notable comedic relief characters, particularly Dieter and Peters.

This movie, however, doesn’t only lean harder into the comedy, but the producers actually describe it as a “romantic comedy,” although based on the trailer, it certainly seems to embrace more traditional action-comedy tropes than what you’d expect from a stereotypical rom-com; although there’s a clearly established romance between Dieter and Gwendoline, so it’s certainly not without its romantic subplot.
