A new trailer for the upcoming period drama Around the World in 80 Days reveals David Tennant’s unlikely adventurer Phileas Fogg. Best known for his role as the Tenth Doctor in BBC’s Doctor Who, the much-beloved Scottish actor’s extensive resumé has seen him perform in a range of eclectic roles from the demon Crowley in Good Omens, through to the villainous Kilgrave in Jessica Jones and even providing the voice of Duck Tales’ Scrooge McDuck. In 2019 the BBC announced that Tennant would be tackling the lead role of Phileas Fogg in a new television series adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic 1873 novel.

Loosely based on the real-life travels of 19th century American writer William Perry Fogg, the story of Around the World in 80 Days revolves around a wager that Tennant’s character makes with the pretentious members of the influential Reform Club that he can circumnavigate the globe in 80 days. Previously adapted for the screen numerous times throughout the years, Fogg’s character has formerly been portrayed by the likes of Pierce Brosnan, Steve Coogan, and David Niven. Joining Tennant in this latest adaptation is French actor Ibrahim Koma as Fogg’s valet Passepartout, and The Crown’s Leonie Benesch as the journalist Abigail Fix.

Ahead of the series US debut on Masterpiece for PBS in January next year, a new trailer offers fans a good look at Tennant’s turn as the famous yet unlikely adventurer. Promising an exciting and humor-filled journey, Tennant’s latest role looks as though it will be another much-acclaimed performance for the actor who already boasts a long list of awards and accolades. One thing that fans of Verne’s original tale will take note of is the change made to the role to that of Inspector Fix. In the original book, and many of its adaptations over the years, Fogg is pursued in his journeys by Inspector Fix who mistakenly suspects him of having robbed the Bank of England and is intent on seeing him return to British soil where he can finally arrest him. In this latest adaptation, the role instead seems to have been changed to Benesch’s aspiring journalist Abigail Fix who joins Fogg on his journey for a chance to report on the story. Of course, this is not the first adaptation to take liberties with the source material, with 2004’s film adaptation which starred Jackie Chan as Passepartout deviating wildly from Verne’s original plot for comedic purposes.

Changes to the source material and Inspector Fix’s character aside, this new trailer seems to promise an epic journey that is sure to tickle audiences’ funny bones. Well known for his own comedic prowess, Tennant’s turn as Verne’s hero Phileas Fogg will undoubtedly place his unique stamp on a role that has been played by many well-known actors over the years. Tennant’s enormous fanbase will be waiting with bated breath until Around the World in 80 Days makes its debut on January 2.
