Arrested Development’s Barry Zuckerkorn is the worst lawyer imaginable, but he also delivers some of the most hilarious lines in the series.

Arrested Development is a show full of some of the worst people in the world. With a narcissistic mother, a greedy, cowardly father, two insecure brothers, a selfish, materialistic sister, and a deluded, annoying brother-in-law, Michael Bluth is constantly flabbergasted, defeated and angry. When he is not dealing with his horrible family, or Tobias’ very poor, inappropriate choice of words, Michael is dealing with a bevy of lawyers and police officers who are all eager to solve the case of his father’s alleged treason.

The family lawyer, Barry Zuckerkorn (played by Henry Winkler aka Happy Days’ The Fonz), is one of Michael’s greatest headaches. Incompetent, stupid and a waste of money, Barry’s lazy attitude is nonetheless amusing for viewers who know to expect the worst of Arrested Development’s characters.

10 “They Cannot Arrest A Husband And Wife For The Same Crime.”

Barry is notorious for giving very bad advice to his business clients. One such advice is when he tells George Bluth that the FBI cannot arrest a husband and wife for the same crime. George also stupidly takes Barry’s advice at face value. Obviously, what Barry means is that a husband and wife cannot testify against each other.

Barry is incognizant of the law to an exaggerated degree. George Bluth’s stunned face when he finds out Barry’s mistake is a face that many of Barry’s clients make throughout the show, and his advice always gets his clients into further trouble with the law.

9 “With The Cell Phone Charges, I’m Going To Round It Up To About An Hour.”

Not only is Barry ignorant and incompetent, he is also inconsiderate. In “In God We Trust,” the family is gathered to discuss George Bluth’s case with Barry. Barry, who has been on the phone outside for eons, joins the meeting to ask how long he has been outside on the phone with another client. “25 minutes,” Michael responds.

“You know, with the cell phone charges, I’m going to round it up to about an hour. Plus it’s easier to bill,” the attorney replies. Barry Zuckerkorn wildly overcharges his clients. In this case, rather than round the phone call to 30 minutes, his greed makes him round it up to an hour.

8 “You’re Scaring Me! Leave It Alone!”

Barry’s funniest characteristic is how stunned he leaves people with his blasé attitude to life. Rather than take Michael seriously when his client absent-mindedly states that the meeting has been a waste of two hours, Barry capitalizes on the opportunity to bill the family for two hours, most of which he spent with another client. This is also after he stole some pastries.

When Michael asks to see Barry’s ledger to figure out how much Barry is charging for the meeting, Barry creates a distraction, screaming, “I’m taking notes on the case! You’re scaring me! You know what? Just leave it alone! Leave it alone! It is a gift from a client!”

7 “I Had Another Hearing. I Think I’m Going To Get Off. I Have A Good Lawyer.”

“Sorry, sorry, sorry I’m so late. I had another hearing. Here’s the good news: I think I’m going to get off. I have a good lawyer. You look great in red. Anyhoo! What are we doing here? What’s the plan?” “The plan? You’re our lawyer!” Lucille replies.

In another scene that leaves everyone shocked at Barry’s incompetence, Barry arrives late to George’s hearing, apologizing for his lateness. He was at another trial where he was the defendant. Even worse, he has not prepared for the case at all and asked his clients how they plan to defend themselves in court.

6 “FYI. I’m Trying To Get Back In The Dating World.”

The family is overjoyed to hear that the DA has given George a plea bargain a day before his trial is about to begin. Nonetheless, when asked what the plea bargain is, Barry does not know, because he spent the night before “trying to get back in the dating world.” Michael is very angry to hear this, and he stares Barry down, commenting, “I don’t understand how a person can put their sex life in front of their work.”

Barry always puts the family’s case last over his own desires, but he has no problem billing them for hours he never worked. In his typically lazy fashion, he leaves Michael to do all his work for him.

5 “They Still Look Fabulous!”

As well as his other vices, Barry has no self-control. He flirts with Lucille whenever she is around, looking at and commenting on how sexy her body is. Furthermore, he often touches her inappropriately. Barry’s life of excess has led the lawyer to set his eyes on his clients indiscriminately. A few seconds after flirting with Lucille, Barry tells Michael that he could kiss him on the ****, much to Michael’s utter shock. Barry is clearly in a sexual experimentation phase of his life, which makes everyone around him uncomfortable (except Lucille).

In another scene, Barry arrives at the police station with a young lady on ‘Take Your Daughter To Work Day.” Michael mistakes the young lady for his daughter, which Barry quickly corrects. “I thought you wanted me to call you daddy,” she asks, prompting Michael’s confusion and judgment.

4 “I Had A Really Interesting Date Last Night. A Woman Who Actually Works Two Jobs.”

Barry’s long history as a criminal is a perfect signifier of the Bluth family’s corruption and guilt. The family is so guilty that the only lawyer they feel comfortable with is one who is always on the wrong side of the law – just like them.

When Barry talks about “dates,” what he means is he is hiring sex workers, a decision for which he always ends up arrested. The show makes fun of Barry’s double life as a man who is sworn to uphold the law, but who repeatedly breaks it. Barry’s sexual experimentation also ends up in multiple arrests for the esteemed lawyer.

3 “Are You Nuts?”

After Kitty, George’s mistress and personal assistant, disappears, Michael is questioned by the police. The police ask Michael if he is willing to take a polygraph test. Barry bends to advise Michael discretely, but instead screams, “Are you nuts?” – making Michael look guilty. Frustrated, Michael answers the question by adding that he wouldn’t take the polygraph test. “Not without a better lawyer.”

In another episode of Arrested Development, Barry asks Michael to communicate if he is guilty by giving him a high five as a discrete sign. This interaction takes place in front of the persecution. Michael’s frustration with Barry is hilarious because Lucille has forbidden him from firing Barry. Michael has to put up with the worst lawyer in the world to exonerate his father.

2 “Does This Look Contagious To You?”

“No, I know! I know! Everybody says leave it alone! Hey, does this look contagious to you? Hey, kiddo!” Barry scratches the big fat black boil on his head, then rubs his hands on George Michael’s chest, scaring the boy into thinking he will catch a contagious skin disease. George Michael quickly brushes his shirt to avoid contagion.

Barry, as always, remains clueless, with zero self-awareness. Especially considering Barry’s hidden nightly proclivities, it is safe to assume that the boil is highly contagious and toxic.

1 “The Will Is At My Office, Next To The Hot Plate With The Frayed Wires.”

Bounty hunter, Ice, finds out that George Senior has been murdered in Mexico. Ever-materialistic, Lucille pretends to grieve as an excuse to ask for George’s will. The narrator reveals that Barry has actually lost the will. Hence, he takes a cue from Lucille and pretends to grieve to hide his irresponsibility.

“The will is not here. The will is at my office, next to the hot plate with the frayed wires. I didn’t … It wasn’t … How did I get here? Oh my God, Lucille! He is gone!” Neither Barry nor Lucille cares about George. Both shysters, they use grief as a good justification for their vices. Barry can be smart when he needs to be, he is just too lazy to actually use his brain.
