Arrow 10 Most Hated Supporting Characters Of All Time

When a TV show goes on for years, many characters usually play their part in the story. The superhero show Arrow is no exception. Ending with its ninth season, the show featured many memorable characters, both heroes and villains, or those in between. Some of them became fan favorites while others didn’t manage to gain the viewers’ love.

And then there are those who turned out to be downright hated by many, either because they were annoying, needy, drew too much attention to themselves, or simply overstayed their welcome. Here are the top 10 most annoying supporting characters in Arrow.

10 Thea Queen

Thea Queen is the younger sister of Oliver Queen aka the Green Arrow. When the show started, Thea was a spoiled rich girl who drowned her sorrows in alcohol and drugs. That kind of behavior didn’t exactly warm her to the viewers’ hearts. She also lashed out at her brother multiple times and made some dangerous choices along the way (like making out with an assassin who was planning to kill her – she didn’t know that, of course). However, as the show went along, Thea’s characters evolved and she eventually became the brave superhero Speedy, assisted her brother and other heroes fighting villains.

9 Laurel Lance

Laurel Lance went through a similarly drastic transformation as Thea did. She started out as a lawyer and formerly Oliver’s girlfriend. His return from the island after five years of being presumed dead devastated Laurel as she also blamed Oliver for the death of her sister Sara (who later turned out to be alive). Laurel later joined team Arrow as the Black Canary, but while she wasn’t a bad lawyer, she didn’t exactly shine as a fighter and died not long afterward. Laurel isn’t a bad character, per se, but the writers often didn’t know what to do with her, which was proved even more when the actress Katie Cassidy returned to Arrow as Laurel’s evil version from another Earth.

8 Roy Harper

Roy Harper starts out as a petty criminal and joins team Arrow, even though he has a hard time fitting in at first. He also becomes Thea’s boyfriend and the two of them share an on-again, off-again relationship. Considering their different natures, it doesn’t often make sense as what they see in each other.

Roy himself has his good moments but he’s often acting rash, impulsive, and even rude, which makes it difficult to truly like him. When he later returns as his older version, it’s easier to vouch for him because he’s calmed down a bit since his beginnings in the show, but his earlier behavior is still enough to get him onto this list.

7 Ricardo Díaz

Arrow 10 Most Hated Supporting Characters Of All Time

Arrow had a lot of villains during its run. Some of them were more popular, some less, but all of them managed to leave their mark on Oliver and make his life more difficult. One of them was Ricardo Díaz who had everything he needed to become a great villain but somehow never made it work. Maybe because it wasn’t clear what he was actually after, besides torturing Oliver both physically and mentally. So when the fans found out that Díaz would be back for season 7, nobody was very excited about it. This is a shining example of a character who overstayed his welcome.

6 Damien Darhk

Arrow 10 Most Hated Supporting Characters Of All Time

Let’s stay with the villains for a moment longer, alright? As Arrow progressed, more and more villains appeared and some of them, while sounding good on paper, left the viewers less than impressed. Damien Darhk was one of them. He could have become a truly powerful threat but instead, he spent a lot of his time making villainous speeches and snarling at the characters. His one truly memorable moment from the show is killing Laurel aka the Black Canary (see above). Strangely enough, Damien was better in Legends of Tomorrow, probably because they introduced his daughter Nora into the mix.

5 William Clayton

Arrow 10 Most Hated Supporting Characters Of All Time

William is an excellent example of the fact that the writers of the show struggled with introducing Oliver’s children in a meaningful way. William is Oliver’s estranged son whom he didn’t know. After his mother died on the island Lian Yu, Oliver took William in and took care of him. Their relationship was far from stellar, though, especially when Oliver continued in his superhero activity. The show didn’t really give William a lot to work with and even his few emotional scenes with Oliver felt forced at times. The situation only improved when William appeared as a grown-up later on.

4 Donna Smoak

When it comes to popularity amongst Arrow’s fans, the Smoak family can’t seem to catch a break. Donna Smoke couldn’t possibly be more different from her brilliant hacker daughter, but she still brought on the wrath of the viewers when it became clear that her role would be mostly limited to jokes and would serve as comic relief.

Donna isn’t a bad person at heart, but she’s nowhere as interesting as the other characters. And don’t forget her relationship with Quentin Lance, which proves that opposites do indeed attract… but usually don’t last long together. These two were just too different to ever work.

3 Amanda Waller

Arrow 10 Most Hated Supporting Characters Of All Time

Amanda Waller is a fascinating character in comics. If you don’t believe it, read the Suicide Squad, for example, where she controls Harley Quinn, Deadshot, and other deadly characters. Amanda is ruthless, cunning, intelligent and capable of doing everything she wants to succeed in her work, even if it means bending the rules of morality more than once. That said, the Arrow version of Amanda never really got the proper characterization she deserved and is only a pale shadow of the comic book Amanda. That’s why fans didn’t really mourn her exit from the show when Lyla Michaels replaced her as the director of A.R.G.U.S.

2 Talia Al Ghul

Arrow 10 Most Hated Supporting Characters Of All Time

Nyssa Al Ghul was a perfectly balanced villain who was partially humanized thanks to her relationship with Sara Lance. The two women genuinely cared about one another. However, Nyssa’s sister Talia is nowhere near as interesting… and the fans noticed. It’s even worse because in the comics, Talia is the mother of Damian, Bruce Wayne’s child, and she’s a formidable opponent to Batman. Of course, Batman isn’t in Arrow so all of us can only wonder what would happen if Talia had been a bit more similar to her comic book version. Maybe then she wouldn’t fade into oblivion like so many less fortunate Arrow villains.

1 Felicity Smoak

Felicity Smoak is by far the most controversial character on the show. She was originally meant to only be a temporary character, with a guest spot in season one. She became one of the biggest supporting characters and while many people loved her and her relationship with Oliver, a large number of fans of the show hated Felicity. While she and Oliver had their strong moments, their romance also seemed quite toxic and forced at times. Felicity herself then could often be overbearing, unkind, and jealous of the attention Oliver paid to others which certainly didn’t improve her image.
