It can be said that the first and last lines of any character are the most important. The first lines show audiences who these characters are in their first moments, while the last exhibits what they’ve become. It serves as a sign of change.

Arrow, the superhero show that redefined the Green Arrow with a grounded tone, is no stranger to change. Over eight seasons, the series showcased amazing characters, some of the best fight scenes to grave the CW and development across one hundred-seventy episodes full of action and spectacle. The first and last lines of the main characters are a monument to the development over the series’ run.

10 Slade Wilson/Deathstroke

First: “Twitch and I will open your throat.”

First impressions in tv shows are never meant to be lasting. When Slade Wilson appeared in Arrow, audiences knew that at some point, he would become the infamous villain Deathstroke(a character who helped make season two one of the show’s best). When he did, the villain’s first words really hit home.

Last: “Thank you, kid.”

As the show progressed, Slade’s vendetta against Oliver faded, and in the sixth season, he asked Oliver for his help. The act of kindness ended with Slade going off on a quest to find his sons, leaving Oliver with words of generosity in comparison to the opening words of hate.

9 Malcolm Merlyn/Dark Archer

First: “You look nervous, Moria.”

Not every line is going to seriously reflect upon the character and show an immediate change. With Malcolm Merlyn, the Dark Archer, the change took time as he went from being the big bad in season one who intimidated Moira Queen to a father.

Last: “Let me show you.”

After losing his dignity to the league of shadows, Malcolm joined Oliver on a mission to get his daughter back from Prometheus. In doing so, Malcolm ended up giving his life for Thea, his final words echoing the man he’d become along with his sacrifice.

8 Moira Queen

First: “Has he said anything about what happened?”

The tricky thing with main characters in Arrow is that many don’t last very long. Moira Queen, the mother of Oliver and Thea, made her debut with lines about her concern for Oliver. As time wore on, viewers found out about Moria’s affair, distorting her motherly appearance.

Last: “Emiko, you are welcome here anytime”

When she died in season two for her children, audiences thought it was a fitting end. However, like Malcolm Merlyn, Moira had some appearances throughout the series and ended up meeting her illegitimate child, Emiko, who she welcomed as one of her own.

7 Roy Harper/Arsenal

First: “Well it is hard to run with one under your arm.”

When audiences first met Roy Harper, he wasn’t the vigilante known as Red Arrow or Arsenal they expected him to be. Roy started out as a petty thief, even stealing from Thea before being caught. Of course, from there, there was nowhere else to go but up.

Last: “Yeah, I can make that promise.”

From getting super strength in season two to becoming the red arrow/arsenal in season three before vanishing until season six, Roy’s love for Thea grew over the show until he made her a promise and proposed. Not bad for a thief.

6 Quentin Lance

First: “So that’s your story? A guy in a green hood flew in and single-handedly took out three armed kidnappers.”

Skepticism with vigilantes isn’t uncommon. For most of the show, fans knew Quentin Lance, cop and father of Laurel and Sara to be a non-believer in Oliver’s crusade, pursuing and questioning him every step of the way.

Last: “He stands as a reminder that anyone can change. So will this.”

As with character development, this all changed, with Lance working with Oliver, believing in the Hood, and eventually becoming an ally. Up until his death and subsequent resurrection due to Crisis, Lance was on Ollie’s side. His last words, commemorating Oliver as a reminder for change hit the point home all too well.

5 Laurel Lance/Black Canary/Black Siren

First: “If we can’t win a class action suit against a man whose swindled hundreds of people out of their homes and life savings then we’re not fit to call ourselves a legal aid office.”

Again, not every first line used is going to be golden, especially with Laurel Lance. Shown to be an uptight lawyer who once dated Oliver, hate for Laurel halted when she became the Black Canary, an alter ego who’s spawned dozens of hilarious memes. The hate rose again when Laurel died and a villainous doppelganger took her place.

Last: “So it must be strange seeing me.”

This new Laurel, Black Siren, slowly took on the same attributes of old Laurel, becoming a similar person. She gave up her evil ways and became the Black Canary up until the series end with those final words complimenting her change.

4 Thea Queen/Speedy

First: “I knew it. I knew you were alive!”

Heartwarming first encounters on a series can sometimes the stage for large levels of change. Thea Queen, Oliver’s sister, greeted her brother’s return with open arms and at first appeared to be a by the books girl with a heart of gold despite Oliver not being a good brother half the time.

Last: “I’m sorry it took something like this for us to finally meet.”

Like with most characters though, Thea went through Hell alongside her brother, being addicted to drugs, being Merlyn’s daughter, and eventually becoming the Red Arrow in the end. If anything, her final lines of her greeting her half-sister Emiko can be seen as growth from her brother’s return.

3 Felicity Smoak/Overwatch

First: “Of course. I know who you are, you’re Mr.Queen.”

There are times when accidents can happen with a show for the better, like with tech whiz Felicity Smoak. Felicity was originally meant to be a one-off character but due to her quirky yet pleasing first appearance, fans fell in love with her character.

Last: “Well, that would be in the IT department seven floors down.”

As such, Felicity became a series regular, evolving from a regular tech whiz to the team’s “Overwatch.” She’d go on to commit some terrible acts and have a few horrible moments among some good and eventually marrying Oliver. In the series finale, Felicity even remarks on how funny it is that they’re still together, given how they first met by her account.

2 John Diggle/Spartan

First: “Diggles good. Dig if you want.”

It’s always the side characters who end up becoming those audiences care so much about. The very first-time viewers met John Diggle, he, like his name, seemed like a simple bodyguard who would never know Oliver’s secret.

Last: “Cause if the past eight years have shown us anything, it’s that this universe is far bigger than any of us could’ve dared imagined. Even if it is a little less bright without him in it.”

Flashforward eight years and Diggle’s fighting alongside the man he now considers to be his brother and moonlighting as a vigilante, Spartan. He even gives one of the best lines of the series finale as an eulogy for Oliver, fully cementing the change he went through from season one to the finale.

1 Oliver Queen/Green Arrow

First: “The name of the island they found me on is Lian Yu. It’s Mandarin for Purgatory.”

Who would’ve thought that those words would stick with audiences for the years to come? Oliver Queen began his journey much like how he was found on Lian Yu, stuck in Purgatory and always seemingly stuck in a constant fight.

Last: “It’s a long story. Lucky for us, we have all the time in the world for me to tell it to you.”

However, while Oliver spent five years in Hell (one of the many times audiences felt bad for Oliver despite some of the moments that made them hate him), he spent the next eight saving his city, making friends and allies, and dying for the cause. Those final words of him cheerfully telling Felicity they have all the time in the world is the perfect note to end the series on.
