Arrow Why Echo Kellums Curtis Left After Season 7

Curtis Holt (Echo Kellum) left Arrow during season 7. He was introduced in season 4 as a tech expert who made friends with Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) before he eventually discovered Oliver’s secret and became an ally to Team Arrow. In season 5, Echo Kellum was promoted to series regular, with Oliver (Stephen Amell) electing to make Curtis a full-time member of the new version of the team, alongside recruits such as Rene (Rick Gonzalez), Rory (Joe Dinicol), and Evelyn (Madison McLaughlin).

Rory had to quit in season 5 after losing his powers and Evelyn turned out to a be traitor, but both Rene and Curtis remained at Oliver’s side throughout his struggles against Prometheus (Josh Segarra) and Diaz (Kirk Acevedo) in seasons 5 and 6. Along with new season 5 character Dinah (Juliana Harkavy) and old allies like Felicity and Diggle (David Ramsey), both Rene and Curtis remained important fixtures of Team Arrow for quite some time. His role changed on the show after season 6 after he decided to quit Team Arrow and work with Diggle and Lyla (Audrey Marie Anderson) at A.R.G.U.S., where he stayed for half of a season before deciding to leave Star City. He only showed up a few more times after his exit.

In Arrow season 7, episode 13, Curtis received a job offer from a tech company in Washington D.C., but the character was hesitant to take it. Diggle attempted to keep him around by offering him a better position at A.R.G.U.S., but Curtis ultimately turned him down, opting to make the move to Washington D.C., believing that he can do good work there. It’s important to note that Curtis’ departure from Star City was not a story-driven decision. According to Echo Kellum, he spoke to Arrow’s then-showrunner Marc Guggenheim and asked to be written out so that he could spend more time with his family. They worked out a way for Curtis to leave, but managed to leave the door open for at least a few guest appearances.

Kellum’s exit left the team minus a key hero for the second half of season 7. And since Felicity wasn’t around in season 8, Oliver and Diggle had to go through their final Arrowverse mission without a tech expert to guide them through it. But the format of the show’s final season worked without a need for one on a regular basis, since Oliver was no longer operating out of the bunker. For the most part, he was being sent to other places.

Though Curtis stopped being a regular ally when he left Arrow, his presence in the Arrowverse didn’t come to a complete end. He made a few guest-starring appearances, returning to Star City when needed, including when the Crisis was looming. He was also one of a number of former Team Arrow members to pay their respects to Oliver Queen at his funeral in the Arrow series finale.
