The Flash remains an integral part of the Arrowverse on the CW and is also set to continue as part of the DCEU in the upcoming Flash movie. That’s a lot of Flash. As comic book readers know, there is even more in the comics. In fact, multiple Flashes are actually the lynchpin for the very concept of the multiverse in comics and now their screen adaptations.

The Flash’s place in comic book history is significant for a number of reasons, but even big fans may not be aware of all the intricacies of this legendary character. From the Golden Age of comics to this very moment, Flash has been running through some of the most important moments in comic book history.

10 The Scarlet Speedster

The Flash hails from the earliest epoch of the superhero genre of comics. He first appeared in Flash Comics #1 in November of 1939, a mere year after the superhero concept took off with the debut of the Man of Steel, Superman.

Writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert co-created the character and Jay Garrick, the original Flash, quickly became one of the most popular Golden Age characters. He appeared in other comics as well, including All-Flash Quarterly and All-Star Comics as a member of the original Justice Society of America.

9 Jay Garrick

The Flash has been a number of different characters in the comics. The first was Jay Garrick who in the original stories was a student who gained his superspeed by inhaling hard water vapors. This was unusual, and would later be revised to other means, but much of The Flash character was there from the start.

His iconic costume was inspired by the Roman god Mercury, whose speed allowed him to be a messenger among the gods. Garrick would be The Flash until 1956 when the character would be revived for a new audience.

8 Barry Allen

In 1956, The Flash would be reimagined by writer Robert Kanigher and penciler Carmine Infantino as Barry Allen in Showcase #4. Allen was a scientist who gained his powers through an accident in his lab. He took on the name of the Flash from his hero, Jay Garrick.

Barry also introduced the now legendary all-red costume, which informed all of the best Flash live-action costumes. In the beginning, Barry stored his costume inside of a ring. Barry Allen would go on to become a major part of the burgeoning superhero DC Universe.

7 Justice League Of America

The superhero genre accelerated into popular culture in the 1960s, and in large measure that begins with the debut of the Justice League Of America in The Brave and the Bold #28 in March 1960. The Flash was a founding member of the all-star team and has been an integral part of JLA ever since.

The Justice League of America motivated Marvel Comics to get in on the super team craze, leading to the creation of the Fantastic Four a year later. The team also inspired an obvious homage at Marvel Comics in the form of Squadron Supreme.

6 Introduction To The Multiverse

Perhaps the single greatest contribution of The Flash to comic book history is the concept of the multiverse. “Flash Of Two Worlds” from The Flash #123 in 1961 transported Barry Allen to Earth-Two, a parallel world in which Jay Garrick was still active as the original Flash. This allowed fans of both to enjoy stories about each character.

The concept of other Earths profligated in DC Comics for years after, leading to some confusion about what was and wasn’t canon. This uncertainty eventually came to a head in the 1980s.

5 Crisis On Infinite Earths

By the mid-80s, there were a number of different worlds within DC Comics and a lot of different versions of significant characters, The Flash among them. Some thought this was too confusing, which led to 1985’s Crisis On Infinite Earths (later adapted into the Arrowverse).

This massive storyline sought to streamline DC continuity into one single world. The Flash played a major role in it. Barry Allen dies trying to save the world from the Anti-Monitor in one of the most shocking deaths in comic book history.

4 Wally West

The legacy of The Flash would continue in the aftermath of Crisis On Infinite Earths with Wally West. At the time, Wally, Barry’s nephew, was his sidekick Kid Flash. He took over the role and remain as the primary Flash for over twenty years.

Wally was a founding member of the Teen Titans superhero group before becoming the Flash. Wally was depowered significantly from Barry Allen, who could run at the speed of light. Wally could only do the speed of sound, limiting the range of his power and potential.

3 Bart Allen

Another major Flash in the comics is Bart Allen, who also started as a sidekick. Originally introduced as Impulse, he became Kid Flash under Wally West and then later became The Flash. His backstory is pretty complicated, though, being from the 30th century and a descendent of Barry Allen and Iris West Allen.

Bart would eventually go back to being Kid Flash, die, and then come back to life. He remains part of the Young Justice team in the comics. Bart Allen is coming to the Arrowverse later this season, and it’s a reveal that the show has been building to for some time.

2 Flashpoint

The Flash was involved in another major storyline involving the multiverse and DC continuity. Barry Allen eventually returned to the comics in the Final Crisis storyline in 2008. That eventually led to Flashpoint, in which Barry resets time again after finding himself in an alternate world where much of DC history was turned upside down.

This story is presumed to be the foundation for the upcoming Flash movie, which will deal with the multiverse by including both the Michael Keaton Batman and Ben Affleck Batman.

1 The Speed Force

The earliest versions of the Flash got their powers from water vapors or a lightning bolt striking a lab full of chemicals. In later DC Comics continuity, the Flash derives his power from the Speed Force.

The Speed Force is an extradimensional energy field that allows The Flash – and numerous other speedsters in DC Comics – to run in excess of the speed of light without any of the side effects. The Speed Force protects The Flash from the enormous G-forces, lack of oxygen, and other practical considerations that anyone accelerating at such speeds would have to deal with.
