Warning: This post contains spoilers for Stargirl season 2’s episode 2.

Stargirl season 2 introduced Jennie Scott as the new Green Lantern, and here are her powers and origin explained. The Arrowverse series has officially introduced an iteration of Green Lantern. Like Rick Tyler (formerly Rick Harris), who is the son of the original Hourman, Jennie is a Justice Society of America legacy as well, the daughter of Alan Scott’s Green Lantern. Her arrival in Stargirl season 2 shook things up for Courtney Whitmore and the JSA, with Jennie’s future as the Green Lantern seemingly set in stone.

Stargirl season 2’s second episode began with Jennie leaving her foster home in Wisconsin and heading to Blue Valley after being left with the power ring that once belonged to her father. The ring led her to the lantern and Jennie learned to control her powers a bit while also clashing with Courtney, who was jealous of Jennie’s legacy status and her newfound connections with Pat Dugan and the rest of the new JSA’s members. Jennie had a lot to learn about herself with regards to her abilities, as well her family history, much of which is still a mystery.

While Jennie has yet to officially take up the name of her comics counterpart, Jade, she is a new version of the Green Lantern. Here is everything to know about Jennie’s powers, origin story, her search for her mysterious brother, and potentially joining the JSA in Stargirl season 2.

Jennie’s Green Lantern Powers Explained (& How She Got Them)

Jennie got her powers because she is the daughter of Alan Scott, one of the original members of the JSA. After leaving the Ordway Home for Children, the power ring was immediately drawn to her. Similar to Alan, Jennie is able to conjure up various solid objects, including a car, which she can control through telekinesis. She can also use the power ring to fly. But whereas Alan needed to charge the ring by touching it to the lantern, Jennie is able to charge it herself. Jennie is essentially the lantern and she is able to charge it and absorb its energy. Because she’s able to control it using her emotions and the lantern reacts to her feelings, Jennie is like an extension to the green lantern itself. The lantern calls to Jennie and the use of the power ring was what allowed her to find it. Since Jennie is the daughter of the original Green Lantern, she was likely born with a connection to the ring and lantern; in the comics, she’s a metahuman who can channel her Green Lantern power energy through a birthmark on her palm. It’s unclear whether that will be brought up in Stargirl season 2, but it could explain a lot more about her abilities eventually.

Why Jennie & Todd Were Separated (& What Happened To Their Mom)

Arrowverses First Green Lantern in Stargirl Explained Powers & Origin

Jennie grew up in a foster home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and it’s clear she was without her brother Todd, whose whereabouts are currently unknown. Jennie heads to Blue Valley, Nebraska in a bid to find the lantern that once belonged to her father, who left her the Green Lantern ring. What Stargirl has yet to explain is how Jennie and Todd were separated, but her foster care status suggests Jennie and Todd ended up in different locations since the adoption system doesn’t always keep siblings together. All Jennie has of her brother thus far is his name scribbled onto the bottom of a toy car and it’s confirmed she didn’t really know her father at all. Jennie has yet to reveal any information about their mother, but the comics paint a clearer picture, one that Stargirl could end up adapting later on in the season.

In DC Comics, Jennie and Todd’s mother was Rose Canton (aka, Thorn), a reformed villain who eventually married their father Alan Scott. Fearing she would harm Jennie and Todd with her powers, Rose gave them up for adoption and they were separated very young, growing up in different foster homes. They didn’t learn of each other’s existence until they were teenagers, which explains why Jennie only has a toy car with her brother’s name on it in Stargirl. Interestingly, Green Lantern didn’t know about Rose’s villainous identity and they continued to fight each other for some time after. It’s possible Thorn could show up as a villain in Stargirl season 2. And, while it’s unclear if Green Lantern knew about Jennie and Todd at all, it’s likely there will be more information about his story and what he knew of his children in the flashback episode.

Why Jennie Left Shortly After Her Introduction In Stargirl Season 2

Arrowverses First Green Lantern in Stargirl Explained Powers & Origin

Jennie left her foster home and, with the help of the power ring, was able to track down her father’s lantern in Blue Valley. However, the lantern itself is not what she was in search of. Rather, Jennie believed the power ring would lead her to Todd, the brother she seems intent on finding. After she became one with the lantern and was able to more seamlessly utilize her powers, Jennie left at the end of the episode to continue looking for her brother. It’s possible Jennie will return later on in Stargirl season 2 or that the show will follow her journey toward finding Todd before she joins back up with Courtney and her friends. After all, Jennie knows Pat knew her father and it’s unlikely she would give up learning more about him from someone who had a personal connection with him. Since Jennie didn’t grow up with her family, and she got a taste of what that looked and felt like when she stayed with Courtney’s, the new Green Lantern will likely want to find her brother even more now that she’s finally found some answers.

Will Jennie Officially Join The Justice Society Of America In Stargirl Season 2?

All signs seem to be pointing to yes. Jennie had a big introduction in Stargirl season 2 and it’s doubtful the show would showcase a bit of her backstory, bring her to Blue Valley to meet the other JSA members, and then send her away permanently offscreen. Stargirl has incorporated themes of legacy and family — there’s a lot of potential to further explore these themes through Jennie, who is being set up as more than Green Lantern’s daughter and is someone who’s already established a good rapport with the JSA.

Jennie has a long journey ahead of her before she returns to the JSA, but it’s likely she will return to Blue Valley sooner rather than later. When she does get back, Jennie could finally work her way up to becoming Jade, her true superhero moniker from the comics, to join the JSA in an official capacity. She and Courtney are on much better terms now and there’s potential for a great friendship to blossom between the two later on in Stargirl season 2. Either way, the JSA needs all the help they can get when they eventually battle Eclipso (and the Shade) and Jennie’s Green Lantern powers will certainly be an asset as she follows in her father’s superhero footsteps.
