From the original Assassin’s Creed to Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, the franchise has endured many highs and lows as staples for video game consoles. With over 10 titles in the main series, the Assassin’s Creed franchise is one that shows no signs of slowing down.

Though they are more famous for console releases, UbiSoft has made and published several titles for handheld systems. They have quite a variety of styles and qualities with some being better than others. Mobile games will not be counted since many of them are discontinued at this point.

7 Assassin’s Creed: Altaïr’s Chronicles (2008)

Credit to the fact that UbiSoft was able to put so much into a Nintendo DS title is warranted. However, Assassin’s Creed: Altaïr’s Chronicles suffers from being a rushed title to capitalize on the hype for the first game. It looks and feels like an old mobile phone game but not the kind of mobile game that is still fun years later.

The levels are short and linear with the game constantly holding the hand of the player. Altaïr’s Chronicles can be beaten within just four hours of gameplay. The stealth and combat elements were seen as bland and the voice-acting is quite poor throughout.

6 Assassin’s Creed II: Discovery (2009)

Though Discovery is another short adventure, its blend of fast Assassin’s Creed movement with the 2D platforming of Prince Of Persia makes for a pleasant experience. The character models are less detailed but the pixelated animation is smooth and fits with the flowing platforming gameplay.

It’s also a joy to play as Ezio Auditore da Firenze since he is still considered one of the best protagonist assassins of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. While it is not a masterpiece, it is a fun gem for the Nintendo DS.

5 Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines (2009)

This exclusive for the PlayStation Portable takes a classic approach to a handheld Assassin’s Creed game. Open world, freerunning traversal, stealth combat, assassinating, and anything else that made the franchise become a success are included.

Fans of the earliest entries in the main series will enjoy this one if they own a PSP. However, Bloodlines is noticeably unpolished and the PSP’s controls take some time to get used to but in the end, it makes for a solid attempt to bring Assassin’s Creed to a handheld.

4 Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia (2016)

The biggest thing Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia has going for it is the setting, seeing how it takes Assassin’s Creed the closest in history it’s been so far with Russia during World War I; it’s a historical setting that fans would love to see again in future games. As a result, there are now guns for the assassin Nikolaï Orelov to use on his side-scrolling adventure.

Like all the Assassin’s Creed Chronicles series, it remains a strong 2.5D side-scrolling action game with stealth elements. However, like its predecessor, it suffers from sequelitis and tends to feel like the same game but with a new paint job. It’s still remembered fondly but the formula was stretched thin with this one.

3 Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: India (2016)

As mentioned prior, the Assassin’s Creed Chronicles games all play almost identically to each other but happen to feature different characters and settings. India is a beautiful locale and the game takes full advantage of the design of its levels.

At the same time, Arbaaz is the most forgettable of the Chronicles series and the lack of innovation will deter some players. That said, most gamers that enjoy the Chronicles spin-offs will still get joy from playing Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: India.

2 Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China (2015)

In 2015, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China was a breath of fresh air that showed the potential for spin-offs. There is a reason why all Chronicles games were remastered and bundled together for consoles and it all began with Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China.

From the 2.5D gameplay to the introduction of Shao Jun, the strongest of the Chronicles heroes. The China setting is also just as exotic and pleasurable to see, especially in darker levels that are litten mainly by the moon. All three Assassin’s Creed: Chronicles titles are underrated PS Vita games that anyone should check out.

1 Assassins Creed III: Liberation (2012)

One of the best exclusives for the PlayStation Vita, Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation sounds like an overpriced DLC for Assassin’s Creed but it’s a full Assassin’s Creed experience. Aveline is a strong protagonist that sadly was forgotten due to the failure of the PS Vita, taking on slave owners in 18th century America.

From surprisingly gorgeous visuals for a handheld to an underrated protagonist, Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation was one of the prime reasons to own a Vita. Later on, it would receive ports to other systems but that doesn’t take away from how impressive of a title it was for not being part of the main series. It makes for the perfect mix of Assassin’s Creed III’s revolutionary gameplay and Black Flag’s pirate gameplay.
