Assassins Creed Infinity Needs to Wrap Up the Franchises ModernDay Story

Ever since the very first game, the Assassin’s Creed series has interwoven a series of historical narratives with a modern-day storyline that ties everything together. This was once a very appealing part of the franchise, as fans got to experience a story full of near-future technology and mystery along with the historical narrative at the center of each Assassin’s Creed game. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way this modern-day narrative got a little too convoluted for its own good, and with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla marking the twelfth game in the main series, it might be time for the modern story to wrap things up.

While the future of Assassin’s Creed’s modern storyline is uncertain right now, fans do have an idea of where the franchise is going after Valhalla. Announced earlier this year, the next Assassin’s Creed title will be a live-service game known as Assassin’s Creed Infinity. Information around the game is very slim right now, and skepticism is particularly high among some fans, but this next venture does have the opportunity to finally give some closure to AC’s modern story. It would certainly be no small move for the franchise, but it could be the best decision to keep Assassin’s Creed from falling into a rut it can’t get out of.

Following Up On Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Ending

Assassins Creed Infinity Needs to Wrap Up the Franchises ModernDay Story

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla did a lot of things with its narrative, splitting the game across multiple different endings that tie up loose ends between past and present. The modern-day ending of Valhalla was one of the most interesting the series has seen in a long time, because it saw the historical storyline’s antagonist Basim become a part of the modern story. The main protagonist at that point, Layla Hassan, also died by Valhalla’s end, leaving players in control of Basim with only a vague sense of his future intentions.

It was one of the most thrilling endings for an Assassin’s Creed game in a long time, and it’s vital that Infinity picks up where AC: Valhalla left off in some way. Between all of the tales of ancient civilizations, impending apocalypses, and modern-day intrigue that AC has tried to balance, things have gotten muddled along the way. For a time, it really seemed like AC had thrown away its modern story and relegated it to an introductory cutscene and brief epilogue, but Valhalla has brought it back with a story of reincarnation and trickery. If any of that is left unresolved by Infinity, it could set the franchise back in a big way.

How Assassin’s Creed Infinity Can Tie Up The Modern Story

For Assassin’s Creed Infinity to end the franchise’s modern story in some meaningful way, it needs to give some closure to the main characters that have been in the series since the start. One such character is Desmond Miles, but as of Valhalla, he isn’t the character that fans remember him as when the series began. Since his death in AC 3, Desmond has become a figure known as the Reader in a digital afterlife known as the Grey. In charge of reading calculations to prevent the end of the world, the Reader could be the key to giving the modern story some kind of closure.

If players in Infinity can interact with and assist the Reader in some way, they could finally help him and the other modern Assassins find a way to prevent civilization from falling apart. AC Infinity can inject all of its Isu storylines and connect Basim in along the way, but helping prevent the end of the world would give closure to one of the biggest sticking points of the franchise. Even if Abstergo still poses some kind of threat to the overall story, cleaning up the mess of the Isu and protecting humanity on a global scale would greatly help the overall story from going in circles any longer.

At this point, there really is no telling what direction Assassin’s Creed Infinity is going to bring the franchise. Fans have already been speculating on where Assassin’s Creed Infinity will take players with its revolving time period style, and ironing out story details is hardly a cut and dry ordeal. It’s going to be quite some time before fans get a better framework for how Assassin’s Creed Infinity is going to look, so the future of the franchise’s modern-day story will remain speculation until then.

Assassin’s Creed Infinity is currently in development.
