Assassins Creed Side Characters You Probably Forgot About

Assassin’s Creed is one of Ubisoft’s biggest, most profitable franchises, featuring dozens of mainline and spin-off games, but players of the franchise may have forgotten some of the many characters in the series. It’s easy to focus exclusively on playable Assassin or Mentor characters in Assassin’s Creed, but the world also features dozens of side characters that give meaning to players’ actions. Despite brief appearances and lessened narrative significance in the series, many of these characters offer playable Assassins their motivations. Without these vital side characters in Assassin’s Creed, it’s unlikely many protagonists would have reached their full potential.

There are currently a dozen mainline Assassin’s Creed games, with seventeen spin-off games and a film contributing to building the game’s lore. Older Assassin’s Creed titles focused on the war between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order, with each organization seeking to mold the world in its image. The Brotherhood believed exclusively in freedom, while the Order pursued peace above all else. Though Ubisoft commonly portrays the Assassins as heroes, no side enjoys a complete ideological victory and both have committed many mistakes at the cost of many lives. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla focused on more mythological enemies, placing the Templars on the backburner while distancing from the Assassin Brotherhood.

While Assassin’s Creed’s protagonists enjoy nearly unlimited screen time in their respective games, side characters succeed in giving them depth and motivation. Not every character encountered existed in real life, nor does every character directly connect to the Assassin Brotherhood or Templar Order. Though Ubisoft has moved away from the traditional gameplay of Assassin’s Creed, the worldbuilding and narratives have continued to evolve and filled each game with realistic, complex characters to accompany their Assassins.

Assassin’s Creed I: Kadar Al-Sayf

Assassin’s Creed’s first death came in the franchise’s very first mission. The original Assassin’s Creed game is often overshadowed by Ezio Auditore’s Assassin’s Creed II, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, and Assassin’s Creed Revelations, but Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad endured a complex redemption arc. Kadar Al-Sayf is one of two Assassins who accompanied Altair to secure an artifact from a Templar excavation team. Kadar is the brother of Malik Al-Sayif, who died thanks to Altair’s selfishness and short-sightedness. By plunging into battle without proper preparation, Templar forces vastly outnumbered the trapped brothers. Templar soldiers swiftly killed young Kadar, and Malik lost his arm in the ensuing fight. This incident contributed to Malik’s hatred of Altair and their Mentor’s purpose behind demoting Altair back to a Novice. Without Kadar’s death, Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad would never have become the Master Assassin of legend he is today.

Assassin’s Creed II: Petruccio Auditore

Petruccio Auditore is Ezio’s youngest brother in Assassin’s Creed II, but chronic health issues prevented him from enjoying the same freedoms as his brothers. In addition, his parents removed him from school, and he hadn’t participated in any Assassin training. Unfortunately, Petrucccio’s life was short as well as challenging. The betrayal of his family led to his execution alongside his eldest brother and father. While players may not remember his face, they likely recall the side mission inspired by his love of feathers (which also appeared in the Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood trailer). Ezio Auditore could collect feathers hidden across the city in honor of Petruccio, growing his brother’s collection when the boy could no longer do so.

Assassin’s Creed Revelations: Vali cel Tradet

Assassin’s Creed Rogue told the story of a turncoat Assassin named Shay Cormac, whose American Brotherhood recklessly caused death and destruction worldwide after seeking First Civilization artifacts. However, Shay Cormac wasn’t the first Assassin traitor players encountered in the franchise. Vali cel Tradet appeared during Ezio Auditore’s gameplay in Assassin’s Creed Revelations. Once a dedicated Assassin, Vali Cel Tradet defected to the Templar Order after the Brotherhood called a truce with the Ottoman Empire. His people had been slaughtered, hunted, and defiled by the Ottomans, and his Brotherhood’s abandonment pushed him over the edge. Though Ezio eventually killed Vali, the tragic traitor reminds players that neither side is always right and stands as a monument to the Wallachian people.

Assassin’s Creed II: Rosa

Assassin’s Creed II introduced many characters across Italy, but Rosa allowed Ezio to explore his empathetic side. A successful member of the Venetian Thieves Guild, Rosa first encountered Ezio by pickpocketing the Assassin. Ezio later saved her life following an attack on the Venetian market, which led the Assassin’s Creed II protagonist to the Thieves Guild. Rosa and Ezio often interacted flirtatiously, with the thief teaching the Assassin several useful abilities, such as the climb-leap. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed team initially planned for Rosa to have a more prominent role in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, but the tragic passing of her voice actor, Lita Tresierra, prevented the character from being developed.

Assassin’s Creed III: Nicholas Biddle

Assassin’s Creed III, Assassin’s Creed Rogue, and Assassin’s Creed Black Flag all included ship combat in addition to Assassin’s Creed’s one-on-one combat. Assassin’s Creed III put players in control of Connor Kenway, a descendant of Edward and Haytham Kenway, and made him the captain of the Aquila. In seeking to regain control of the American Colonies from the Templar Order, Connor pursued Nicholas Biddle, captain of the Randolph. Nicholas Biddle is responsible for attacking various French ships, such as La Belladonna, and carrying supplies for the war effort. Unfortunately, Biddle’s career comes to a fiery end once the Aquila cripples his ship and Connor Kenway boards alongside his crew. Following a tense battle, Connor Kenway claims victory and leaves Nicholas Biddle on the brink of death. A true sailor at heart, Nicholas Biddle requests that he go down with his ship instead of dying at the end of a blade.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag: Caroline Scott-Kenway

Similar to other characters on this list, Caroline Scott-Kenway appeared briefly at the beginning of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag’s story but promptly died off-screen. Edward Kenway married Caroline Scott-Kenway and sired a daughter with her, but his dreams to become a wealthy privateer became more important than his family. Caroline then returned to her merchant parents and raised her daughter, Jennifer, in extreme comfort. Though Edward Kenway’s relationship with Caroline falls apart, his adventures with the Brotherhood against the Templar Order begin to force the pirate captain to realize what truly matters. Though Caroline Scott-Kenway passes away from a mysterious illness before Edward can return to her, he returns to their daughter and raises her as best he can. As the first wife of Edward Kenway, Caroline’s limited presence fails to undercut her importance to the pirate and leads him to leave his privateering life behind.

These characters have a fascinating legacy and attachment to the Assassin’s Creed protagonists, leaving pressing the Assassins onwards towards their goals or merely filling space in the world with charming personalities. Without Assassin’s Creed’s side characters, many Assassins would lack proper motivation, and Ubisoft’s worlds would be home to stunning architecture and mindless AI. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the latest game in the series, with a live-service Assassin’s Creed game currently in development at Ubisoft.
