Astro A20 Wireless Gen 2 Gaming Headset Review

Now that the new generation of consoles is out, many gamers are looking for the next big thing in gaming gear. Astro has been producing gaming accessories since 1994 and this year they introduce the new Astro A20 Wireless Gen 2 Gaming Headset. With their incredibly well-cushioned earcups, 15-hour battery life, and cross-connectivity between consoles and PC, this headset is an easy choice for gamers.

Coming in at $119.99, players have two choices in the A20 headset. The green Xbox Series X model or the blue PlayStation 5 option. Out of the box, either choice comes with a wireless dongle that works on the respective system and PC. Astro also provides a $20 wireless dongle add-on for those gamers that want it to work easily on the opposite system. This makes it easy to switch from console to console without having to unplug anything or even buy a secondary headset. Screen Rant was provided the Xbox Series X version for this review.

The Astro A20 Gen 2 sports around 15 hours of continuous use with a rapid USB-C charging cord included. It easily lasted throughout an entire workday and still had plenty of juice for some Borderlands 3 gaming after. The sound profile isn’t anything new or innovative but focuses on a balanced sound with a solid 3D audio that creates a clear distinction between highs, mids, and lows.

Comfort has always been one of Astro’s main selling points and the cushioned fabric earcups feel amazing, even during long gaming sessions. The wide headband can accommodate almost any head size and fits comfortably without much adjusting. The flip-to-mute mic is nice and sits at a good distance but doesn’t have any kind of satisfying click when lifted making it hard to know if it’s gone far enough to actually activate the mute.

Along the backside of the headset is the standard fair of easy-access buttons with a press and hold on/off switch, 3-tier equalizer, and standard volume wheel. There are also dedicated game or chat buttons that make it easy to find the right balance of in-game volume to team chat voice levels. Every setting works well, but there was a bit of a hurdle to get over with the volume wheel which scrolls a little too fast for precise adjustments.

ASTRO A20 Headset Cross-Platform Connectivity

Simplicity is really the star of the Astro A20 headset as connecting it is as easy as plugging the wireless dongle into any USB port on the Xbox. It took only seconds for the system to recognize it and pair it to the headset. Utilizing the single USB dongle players can easily unplug from the console and plug it into a PC for instant transfers. A single $20 purchase of an additional dongle is required for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 cross-compatibility but the overall cost is much more acceptable than buying two separate headsets.

Overall the Astro A20 Wireless Gen 2 Gaming Headset is a solid choice for gamers. Supported by its mid-tier pricing and cross-connectivity, Astro is an easy choice. There are headsets in the same price range that provide a more robust audio experience and adjustment options, but the pure comfort level of the A20 makes this an excellent choice for gamers who prefer longer sessions.
