Attack on Titan is one of the best manga series ever made. There are many different adaptations of it, such as the anime and the live-action movies. While the anime would become the most popular out of all the Attack on Titan adaptations, the live-action films didn’t receive the same success.

However, that doesn’t mean that the live-action movies weren’t good. While there are a lot of differences between them and the anime, the films introduced things that weren’t in the anime and even improved some things.

8 Better: The Titans Are Scarier In The Movies

Though the Titans are a huge threat in every adaptation of Attack on Titan, they are much scarier in the movies than they are in the anime, making the film feel more like a horror than a fantasy. Due to the films being live-action, it’s much more frightening to see them eat people and rip them open.

When they broke into Monzen, the films’ counterpart to Shiganshina, the fear that Eren, Armin, Mikasa, and the rest of the humans felt was much more realistic than it was in the anime. The scene was much more graphic and people were doing everything they could to get to safety.

7 Worse: The Worldbuilding Was Better In The Anime

In the anime, most of the people in Paradis believed that only Titans lived outside the walls. However, the Survey Corps eventually discovered the truth when they read the books Grisha Jaeger left behind. There were many other people in a lot of other countries, most of which hated the Eldians for the ways they abused them for centuries. Eren eventually goes to these other nations when he starts the Rumbling.

In the movies, however, Eren instead learns that Titans were created from a military experiment that went wrong, resulting in many people transforming. The government used the Titans to gain more power inside the walls, which Eren hoped to bring an end to peacefully.

6 Better: Normal Titans Were A Main Threat

One of the things that fans liked a lot at the beginning of the anime was the fights between humans and normal Titans. However, once the Titan Shifters and corrupt governments became a greater part of the story, normal Titans weren’t as relevant.

The films change this, as normal Titans are main threats the entire time. While there are greater antagonists in them, the movies continued showing off normal Titans in ways that the anime stopped doing after its first couple seasons.

5 Worse: There Weren’t As Many Titan Shifters

The reason why the movies were able to focus on normal Titans more is that there weren’t nearly as many Titan Shifters in them. Only three Titan Shifters existed in the films, with Eren being the only one that’s also in the anime.

The other two were Shikishima, a mix between the Armored and Beast Titans, and Kubal, the Colossal Titan’s inheritor. The majority of the Nine Titans were written out entirely and none of the Titan Shifters passed their power onto another character.

4 Better: Eren Transforming Into A Titan In Order To Fight Titans For The First Time

While the anime had some amazing plot twists, the earliest ones were very predictable, such as Eren transforming into a Titan. The first movie did a better job at shocking the audience with this reveal, at least for those that didn’t already know that Eren was a Titan Shifter.

As the pacing was faster, fans watched Eren get eaten, only to come out of the Titan that devoured him moments later. Revealing that people could become Titans through this was better than showing Eren in his Titan form fighting on the humans’ side. Audiences were able to suspect what was going on while only the characters were in shock.

3 Worse: The Battles Weren’t As Epic

While the fights from the movies were good, they were nothing compared to the fights seen in the anime. From the skirmishes against normal Titans to the epic battles between soldiers and Warriors, fans were thrilled by the anime’s action.

As the anime follows the manga much closer than the movies did, the final battle will most likely be the same as it was in the original source material, which was one of the most epic fights in anime history as Eren fought the Warriors and soldiers. This final battle was much better than the final battle in the second film.

2 Better: Shikishima Is A Great Character That Is Only In The Movies

Levi and Zeke are two of the most beloved characters in the anime. While the two of them are enemies that have fought each other multiple times, putting them together as one character essentially gives fans Shikishima, a character that only appeared in the movies. He was Eren’s brother, a Titan Shifter, and humanity’s strongest soldier.

While he originally seemed to be a quirky hero, he was eventually revealed to be one of the main villains. He wanted to break down the walls, allowing the Titans to kill most of the human race, so he could rise in power. Shikishima was one of the best villains in the franchise.

1 Worse: A Lot Of The Already Existing Characters Aren’t As Good

While there are a few good characters that only appeared in the films, characters that are from the source material weren’t nearly as interesting as they were in the anime. The movies changed Eren a lot and he was solely the protagonist in both of them, rather than becoming an antagonist as he did in the anime’s last season.

Mikasa, Jean, Armin, Sasha, and many other beloved characters from the anime weren’t as well received by fans either. Many fans preferred the anime versions of these characters over their film counterparts.
