Attack On Titans Why Titans Eat Humans Explained

What exactly drives the Titans to eat people in Attack On Titan? Horrible pun aside, it’s no exaggeration to state that Attack On Titan has become a giant franchise. The manga was created by Hajime Isayama and sees what’s left of the humanity sheltering behind a large walled city from man-eating giants, but when a Colossal Titan appears one day and breaches their outer defenses, mankind is forced to fight back. It’s no mere action series, however, with many shocking twists and deaths occurring as the story unfolds.

The Attack On Titan anime series later debuted in 2013 and the franchise’s popularity has only increased over the years. While the premise could have easily been silly the Titans themselves are genuinely unsettling creatures and neither the manga nor anime are afraid of a little bloodshed. The franchise has received numerous video games and two live-action films from Japan. While both films have their moments, they suffered from condensing the story down and omitting fan favorites like Levi.

While Attack On Titan isn’t strictly a horror series, some of the scenes of Titans eating human beings are truly unnerving, such as the death of Mike in season 2. A long-running mystery on the show was why did Titans eat people instead of animals, especially when they don’t have any digestive organs. The answer was finally revealed during season 3, which showed how Titans see people and the logic behind their diet.

During Attack On Titan season 3 Lord Rod Reiss is seen transforming into an enormous, deformed Titan during a critical episode. The show later cuts to his perspective as he races towards the city, where people are represented to him as bright, glowing lights, and he’s drawn – quite literally – like a moth to the flame. The show also reveals that ALL Titans were once human and are descendants of the very first Titan Ymir, who are injected with spinal fluid by Marley for warfare purposes.

Put simply, Titans eat people in the hopes of regaining their humanity, and if they consume the spinal fluid of a Titan Shifter – one of nine people who can transform into Titans at will – they will return to normal. This happened to Attack On Titan’s Ymir, AKA the Jaw Titan, who spent decades as a mindless Titan before devouring Marcel Galliard and gaining his power. So basically every time a Titan eats somebody, they’re subconsciously hoping to regain their humanity, which almost makes the act more disturbing.
