Avatar 2 Should Bring Back The First Movies Best Deleted Scene

Avatar 2 should reuse the first film’s best deleted scene featuring life on Earth. Thanks to Avatar’s extended edition (along with the complete script), key insights were revealed about humanity’s grim future, which never made the final cut. Putting a spotlight on the planet’s rising population and rapid depletion of resources would make sense for the upcoming sequel to further reveal why Earth is so desperate to claim Pandora as their own.

In the original theatrical cut of James Cameron’s Avatar, audiences are introduced to Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) as the plot’s primary protagonist. Chosen to take his late brother’s place as part of the scientific research team on Pandora, Jake arrives on the world inhabited by the native Na’vi within the film’s first five minutes. However, his recruitment by the RDA (Resources Development Administration) took place while his brother was cremated, serving as the only interaction taking place on Earth, while one of Avatar’s deleted scenes revealed more about what Earth has become in the 22nd century.

In Avatar’s first deleted scene, Jake is shown moving through the incredibly crowded city streets of Earth, with its citizens wearing masks as they’re packed between harsh industrial city buildings covered in bright holographic ads (with no vegetation to be seen). This pairs with additional details provided by the script and companion books which have revealed that Earth’s resources have dwindled along with the rising population, so much so that the unobtainium found on Pandora is immensely valuable as it’s the only thing powering Earth’s energy needs as well as it’s interstellar travel. Given that the conflict between Earth and Pandora will likely grow as the story continues in the sequels, it seems as though Avatar 2 should reuse the deleted scene featuring Earth, expanding on what humanity in the future has truly become due to their overconsumption of resources and pollution.

The first Avatar only speaks to Earth’s need and willingness to go to war for what they want, rather than showing the grim future for the planet in the 22nd century. As James Cameron noted in interviews, showing the state of Earth before revealing Pandora made it feel as though “the film started twice.” Instead, more focus and screentime were justifiably placed on introducing the new world of the Na’vi as soon as possible.

That being said, the opportunity now exists for Avatar’s decaying Earth to be featured much more in the upcoming sequel. The war between Earth and Pandora will most likely get bigger and more dangerous as Avatar 2 and the following chapters release, so it would make sense for both sides of the conflict to be fleshed out as much as possible. Either way, it would certainly be interesting to see the most intriguing deleted scene from the first film being reintegrated into the overall narrative crafted by James Cameron.
