Avatar 3 Has Almost Finished Filming

Director James Cameron says Avatar 3 has almost finished filming. It’s been over a decade since the massively successful 2009 film Avatar premiered in theaters, becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time until Avengers: Endgame topped it last year. Fans have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of Avatar 2 since, but Cameron has been busy taking on not only one, but four sequels to the blockbuster hit all at the same time. Production on the films took a hit this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, but Cameron was given the all-clear to resume filming in June after several delays.

The first installment of the sci-fi film series followed disabled veteran Jake Skully (Sam Worthington), who is sent on a mission to Pandora, where he meets the Na’vi, the planet’s highly evolved natives. Upon its release, audiences were in awe over the movie’s groundbreaking visual effects and immersive cinematic experience. The highly-anticipated sequels had a lot to live up to, but it appears that Cameron is already taking them to new heights. While details surrounding Avatar 2 have been mainly kept under wraps, new images from the film reveal an underwater world on Pandora, with reports stating that much of the film will take place underwater. No information regarding Avatar 3 has been released, other than that its release date has been pushed back to 2024. However, Cameron has given a little update on the film’s progress.

During a one-on-one interview with Arnold Schwarzenegger to promote the 2020 Austrian World Summit, Cameron confirms that Avatar 3 has almost finished filming. Cameron explained that because about four and a half months of production was lost due to coronavirus, Avatar 2 has been pushed back to a December 2022 release, but that Avatar 3 will be wrapping up right behind it. “The day we deliver Avatar 2, we’ll just start working on finishing Avatar 3,” said Cameron. “So where we are right now, I’m down in New Zealand shooting. We’re shooting the remainder of the live-action. We’ve got about ten percent left to go. We’re a hundred percent complete on Avatar 2, and we’re sort of ninety-five percent complete on Avatar 3.”

Cameron went on to tell Schwarzenegger that because New Zealand, the location site for all of the films, is one of the top countries for its COVID response, he doesn’t expect there to be any more delays in getting both movies finished. Though Cameron offered updates on the filming schedules for the next two films, he refused to give up any more details about the stories, saying that he believes in the mystery surrounding them.

While the anticipation surrounding the sequels won’t be over for quite a while, fans will be happy to hear that the filming process is very much on-going. It’s quite ambitious for Cameron to take on all four films at once, but he knows his audiences will be in demand for three more movies after watching Avatar 2. While fans will have to wait a few more years for Avatar 3, it’s a pleasant surprise to know that production has already gotten so far along.
