Avatar How Sokka Died After The Last Airbender Ended (& When)

Sokka was just a kid during the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender, but here’s how and when he died after the show concluded. After he and his sister Katara found Aang, the current Avatar and last Airbender, Sokka’s life was forever changed. He left the Southern Water Tribe behind to help Aang defeat the Fire Nation and stop the Hundred Year War. He became an expert fighter and leader during this time, too, but Avatar: The Last Airbender only showed less than a year of Sokka’s life.

Thanks to other canon material that has been released after Avatar: The Last Airbender ended, the rest of Sokka’s life has been explored. Once the world started to become peaceful, Sokka finally went back to the Southern Water Tribe. Although he had some more adventures with Aang, Katara, Zuko, and Toph, Sokka eventually became the Chief of the Southern Water Tribe and served on the United Republic Council.

Once Sokka became an adult, details on his life are a bit harder to come by, and that includes the details surrounding his death. The last known sighting of Sokka came in 158 AG, when he was 74 years old. This occasion saw Sokka and others protect Korra, the next Avatar, from a group called Red Lotus. But, by the time The Legend of Korra’s main story takes place in 170 AG, Sokka had passed away. So, Sokka died sometime between 158 and 170 AG, and the cause of death is believed to be natural, as he would’ve been between 74-86 years old.

The lack of concrete information on Sokka’s death is the direct result of his limited role in The Legend of Korra. He only appeared in a few flashbacks and series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko didn’t feel that there was a proper time to invest in what happened to Sokka after The Last Airbender and how he died. In an old interview with ScreenCrush, DiMartino said, “Bringing back the old characters is fun to do, but there has to be a specific story reason why they’re back.” In the same interview, Konietzko mentioned that the shorter episode counts on Legend of Korra meant there wasn’t as much time to include history that wasn’t relevant to Korra’s story.

While Sokka’s future after The Last Airbender hasn’t received much attention, many of his friends have had more developed stories. The Legend of Korra revealed how and when Aang died, showed how Aang and Zuko reshaped the world, and gave Katara a prominent role. Aspects of what happened to Toph have also been revealed through The Legend of Korra and other canon materials. As the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender continues to expand, hopefully a bigger focus on Sokka will come at some point.
