Gordon Cormier, star of the upcoming Netflix live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender, shared a picture showing his Aang moves. This update of the original Nickelodeon cartoon, which ran from 2005 to 2008, will begin filming in November. In addition to Cormier as Aang, the series will star Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, and Dallas Liu as Zuko. There have also been rumors swirling that Avatar is casting a live-action Azula.

Gordon Cormier, who has previously been seen in the 2020 Stephen King miniseries adaptation The Stand, will have a lot on his plate taking the lead in this series. The Airbender Aang, who has just been released from being frozen in ice for 100 years, is the Avatar, a reincarnated being who has the power to control all four elements: earth, water, fire, and air. He will train in the different forms of “bending,” each based on a different martial arts style throughout the series. The 11-year-old actor might be taking on a big challenge, but he’s preparing for the role in style.

On his Instagram, Gordon Cormier shared a photo of him dressed as Aang, striking a martial artist pose with the caption “The past can be a great teacher!!” It can’t be confirmed if Cormier is wearing his costume from the upcoming series. Even if he is in costume, it’s certainly not the finished look, considering that Cormier has confirmed that he will be shaving his head for the Avatar role. For now, he’s tucked his hair underneath a hat to simulate the effect. Nevertheless, it’s an exciting glimpse into how the character may eventually look. Check out the post below:

Cormier’s caption is from season 3, episode 13 of the animated Avatar: The Last Airbender, “The Firebending Masters.” Although it is indeed a profound quote, in the original episode, it’s immediately followed by Aang accidentally walking over a spike trap and exclaiming, “I think the past is trying to kill me!” This small moment exemplifies both the profundity and the humor of the original show, and hopefully, this new series will attempt to match that perfect blend.

Given how unofficial this image likely is, it gives an insight into how excited the Avatar: The Last Airbender cast is to be bringing the property to life. It seems like Cormier couldn’t help himself trying out his Aang look early, and just last week, his costar Dallas Liu was gushing about being cast as Zuko. If everyone involved is as enthusiastic as these two, there’s a strong chance that the new series will treat the original cartoon with the respect and energy it deserves.
