A new fan animation shows what a classic scene from season 1 of Avatar: The Last Airbender could look like rendered in 3D. The beautiful reimagining is part of a recent resurgence for the beloved series online, which began when Avatar returned to Netflix in May after an extended absence.

The easy access to streaming has sparked a massive wave of support for Avatar over the past three months, ranging from diehard fans to first-time viewers just now discovering the show’s magic. Avatar was massively successful during its original run from 2005 to 2008, winning a Primetime Emmy, five Annie Awards, and a Peabody Award, among other accolades. The series developed a devoted following during those years that has stayed loyal to the show in the years since, which have seen the release of sequel series The Legend of Korra (coming to Netflix later this month) and a series of novels and graphic novels. The original show holds an incredible 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

In a recent tweet, fan and animator Jacob E Mann shared a brief 3D rendering of a scene from the show, created with fellow artist Sagar Arun. The clip is from the end of “The Blue Spirit,” one of the first season’s more famous episodes, where Prince Zuko helps Aang escape from a Fire Nation fortress while disguised as the sword-wielding Blue Spirit. After escaping – with Zuko having been knocked unconscious by an arrow shot – Aang tells Zuko about his old fire Nation friend Kuzon and asks if Zuko thinks maybe he and Aang could have been friends under different circumstance. It’s a poignant moment for the show’s early chapters, which sets up the long arc of Zuko’s eventual redemption and friendship with Aang, and it’s beautifully retold in Mann and Arun’s animation.

Fans may notice a few changes from the original scene. Aang’s dialogue has been edited down to a more concise moment, for instance, and he’s wearing his season 3 robes, rather than his earlier outfit from seasons 1 and 2. We also sadly don’t get to see a rendering of Zuko here (who shoots a fire blast at Aang directly after this monologue), though hopefully more animations like this could envision other characters from the series as well. It’s not the first piece Mann and Arun have done on Avatar.

With Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar on the distant horizon, the topic of how the story could look in a different visual style has been a common point of discussion among fans. While some are looking forward to the new show – which is being helmed by original series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino – others are wary, afraid this latest version will be similar to the 2010 M. Night Shyamalan film, which was universally panned by fans and critics alike.

With Konietzko and DiMartino back in the saddle, however, the Netflix series could potentially offer something genuinely new and exciting to the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Seeing incredible fan creations like Mann and Arun’s animations shows the potential of reimagining the story for a new generation, though for some, there’s no replacing the original.
